Mexico, a beautiful, affordable getaway for anyone with cheap deals of all-inclusive and taste of nice beach and weather... most esp for North Americans...
I was getting a little too stressed from work since I am a nurse and I work in the Emergency Department it gets a little, over too much stressful... So of course, why not visit Mexico, it's close and the deals around this time are not too bad... it can be cheaper but given that the weather in Mexico is amazing around this time of the month... why not right?
I'm a lover of history... most especially the ancient civilizations.... so, so far going to Mexico was really a long time anticipated travel for me... So we booked... stayed at Mayan Riviera by the Riu Playacar.... the resort was great and the wait staff were amazingly friendly... food was amazing and of course the booze... it's all you can drink any time of the day or night... it's amazing what else can you ask for right...
So I made some reservations for some group tours... around this time the H1N1 was just starting and no one knew about it yet... literally until 3 weeks
when we got back that's when they started to quarantine people who had been back from Mexico... anyways around the time that I was there, the talks of drug war was all over the world... it was scary of course, coming from a totally different country into a place where they say rebels kidnap foreigners and do stuff... but when we got there.... it was really safe... at least their government gave us that feeling.... surprisingly we saw soldiers... and policemen everywhere in the highway making sure things are in order,,, and not with small guns but with rifles.... it was scary at first but after awhile we did felt safe and it gave us the impression that everything is under control...
So off I went to Chichen Itza... first we walked through this path of people seeling souvenirs from left to right... very cheap and very easy to haggle... there were trees after trees and the road was kept in its original state... yellow brownish earthly dirt as I would describe it... the sun was high up and the heat was unbelievable but it was not humid so that was a plus.... it was just a beautiful day...
After a long walk and with our great tour guide who is obviously very knowledgeable about his history... we were lead through the park with a real Mayan tour guide....
As I mentioned before the way to get inside the city was long and with much anticipation I saw it... from a far the ziggurat... Chichen Itza... one of the New Seven Wonders.... Ive always dreamed of one day seeing this wonder even before it became one of the seven new wonders... I love the ancient civilization and especially the Mayans, Incas and Aztecs.... and that day I would never forget... seeing Chichen Itza for the very first time with my own eyes in real life was an amazing feeling... I was standing before an ancient form of sophisticated architecture... where math first started and astronomy was first discovered and the calendar.... Chichen Itza was not only a part of history... but one of the beginnings of history...
To be there and discover their culture and the activities they use to perform at the city of Chichen Itza... was beyond words that I could ever explain.... a friend of mine once said 'i've been to chichen Itza
and it was just a pyramid... big deal'... well it was a big deal... at least for me... it was a flashback to the past... it was not how they were seen as barbaric people but to discover their spiritual beliefs and devotion to their gods... it was beyond anything any books can ever explain...
This place is exquisite and a must see and visit before you die kind of thing... Chichen Itza as I would describe is simple... not grand like the Khmer structures but it's filled with mystery that up to now they're still learning to decipher... Simple, mysterious but architecturally genius and advance for their time...
all in all it was an amazing place to see... and a great inspiration and motivation for my future travels...
