Ok so I wriote this blog yesterday before we headed to Playa del Carmen but didntactually send it...we left playa del carmen with our tour group earlier today and are now in Tulum...OH MY GOD, its AMAZING here!!! its like a beach paradise, and we have our own little cabin right on the beach...its amazing. we have 2 nights here, so will send an update with the pics in the next blog entry!
So finally our trip has begun and the dream has become a reality! After so long planning, saving, and getting ready..we are here and it still doesn't feel real!!
First stop on our agenda was Cancun, Mexico. we have been here since Tuesday morning, and have just checked out of the hostel now and ready to move down the coast to Playa del Carmen where we will meet up with our tour group.
Cancun has been great fun! The white sandy beaches and tropical turqoise sea are amazing...the heat is incredible, and the drinks are cheap..everything is perfect!! We stayed in a hostel in downtown Cancun which is only a 15min bus journey away from the hotel zone where all the lovely beaches are. The only
crap thing about Cancun is that unless you are staying in one of the big hotels along the hotel zone, with its own beach, its almost impossible to get onto the beach. We found two public entrances to the beach which is ridiculous, but once you're on it it's all good!
The first day we arrived was pretty windy and cloudy so we just checked out a few of the bars and had a few local mexican beers sitting on the beach front, just staring at this amazing view! Went to a local hostel bar later that night to have some more beers, was such a chill out bar..the seats at the bar were swings!!
Day two in Cancun, we went to the beach for the morning, and then found a bar playing the Liverpool v Chelsea match for lunch, very disappointing result. After that we went for a 2 hour walk along the coast, strolling by all the different private hotel beaches! Some of the hotels are amazing, and even more amazing were some of the villas right on the beach with their own private piers leading to their private yachts..unbelievable!!
When we got back to
the hostel, the plaza just across the road was so busy with the locals all celebrating Semana Santa (easter week), so there were loads of different stalls selling food. Adam tried out a few of the local tacos which only cost about $2..i was too tired to eat, so we went back to the hostel and had an early night to get over the jetlag!
Day 3 we went to Isla Mujeres, which is only a 15min ferry ride away to the Caribbean island, which is the most eastern point of Mexico. It was a great day out. One of the girls we met at the hostel, came along with us and we all rented bikes for the day! Sounded like fun at the start but it was so so so hot and the saddles were so uncomfortable, we soon got annoyed with it! The island is only 7km long, and we came in on the ferry at the north end. The few sights and things to see and do are all at the very south point of the island so we cycled all the way there in the heat, against the wind, and uphill! When we got there we
treated ourselves to a nice cold drink on the cliff's edge overlooking the Caribbean sea on 3 sides of us...incredible!! We then had a look around and started our cycle back, stopping off at a turtle farm on the way. When the turtles are ready to be set free, the local school kids come by once a year and release them into the sea., its cool! We also saw a few massive lizards just roaming around...they were so big..took photos of course! We then dropped the biked back and filled our empty tummys in a Mexican beach bar, with some Mexican food...fajitas for me!! After our feed we went and just chilled on the beach with a few beers before getting the ferry back to Cancun. We decided to get a few beers to drink in the hostel and see what everyone else there was up to for the evening. Turns out one of the girls, Michelle, was leaving the next day so they were all going out for a big night out...of course we joined in! was so much fun. there were about 12 of us drinking at the hostel then headed to the local chillout bar for a
few games of pool, and then on to one of the local clubs to dance. The dancefloor was only tiny, so when we all took over the Mexicans all took to their seats and just let us be! We then decided the dancefloor wasnt good enough so up we all went to the stage to continue dancing. Next stop was the karaoke bar, which once again we took over and the Mexicans just let us be!! A few of us then decided at about 5 or 5.30am that we had had enough, and back to the hostel we went!
Up yesterday at 10am for our last full day in Cancun. Strolled over to the local shop to get some food, and we got caught in the big procession on the streets, celebrating good Friday, by acting outthe stationsof the cross. They are very religios here, and had a huge open aired mass on the plaza on Thursday night, was weird seeing all these people praying on this plaza while tourists were just walking around and through it with their bags and shoppingor whatever! Anyways a few of us all headed down to the hotel zone to go to the beach,
only to find that we couldnt actually get onto the beach cos the hotels wouldnt let us through...eventually we found one we could sneak through and found a nice spot on the white sand to retreat for the day! The waves were huge, and the water isn't cold at all...was so much fun!
Last night was our last night here, but we were all too tired to do much, so a few of us just sat on the roof chilling, listening to music, and have some drinks! Was pretty cool.
The hostel we stayed in was cool, people were nice, our room was big, breakfast was good, and the guy that runs it was sound, so it all went well....happy days!
Now its time to go, everyone is out for the day and we are going to go and get the bus to our next destination in a while...Playa del carmen. Its only an hour drive away,so it not bad, but my shoulders are burnt so carrying my rucksack is a bit of a problem!! not good!! Travelling time with the tour group now for the next 32 days..all go go go...lots of bus trips, lots of sightseeing,
lots of fun!!! cant wait...
Happy Easter everyone 😊
