OAXACO WITH DONZETTA LA COSTA CHICA - AFRO PUEBLOS

This post will include photos from another one of the afro pueblos of costa chica, El Azufre. It is more remote, isolated and difficult to reach. I went with a neighbor to "un cabo año", the one year anniversary of the death of a relative. Family and friends come for a reunion. They bring gifts. There is a lot of food. It lasts all day and into the night. We spent the morning and afternoon. These are some of the pictures that I took.

El camino a El Azufre
This is the road to El Azufre, very rocky with lots of overgrowth of trees.

El taxista que nos llevó a El Azufre
This is the taxi driver who took us to El Azufre

Mi vecina en el altar
This is my neighbor at the altar of her friend for the anniversary of her friend's death.

Las mujeres estan visitando
The women are visiting while dinner is being prepared

Las jovenes estan visitando
These young ladies are visiting while dinner is being prepared

Los niños estan jugando
The children are playing while the meal is being prepared.

Here is a separate group of adolescents that are "just being adolescents"

This is the youngest person at the reunion. How precious!

Es el "cabo año" de su madre
It is the one year anniversary of the mother of this lady.

Está preparando el agua de limón
She is preparing the limes for "lime water" or limeade. Limes grow very plentifully here. You rarely find lemons (limones amarillos - yellow limes) here, not even in the grocery stores.

Está Preparando la comida
She is preparing part of the hot food for the reunion

Está machando los frijoles
She is mashing the beans for the meal.

El caldo
This is the soup that was prepared and served about 2 - 3 hours earlier than the main meal.

La comida principal
This is the main meal of the day.

Uno de los hombres de la comunidad
This is one of the men of the community. He wanted to talk about some of the issues in the community such as isolation and health care. The head of "E-Costa" (the organization for which I volunteer) is also "el presidente del municipio" (all of the communities in the area).

La cabeza del puerco para la cena
The is the head of the hog which they are cleaning for the pasole (mexican soup) for the dinner meal that night. We did not stay for the dinner meal.

La despedida
This group is saying goodbye to us as we wait on the taxi to come to take us back from El Azufre to Charco Redondo.

El rio fuera de Charco Redondo
This is the river on the other side of the road from Charco Redondo. The government moved the community from next to the river to the other side of the road since when it rained the community flooded.

La caretera
This is the road that separates the new community of Charco Redondo from the river that used to flood the pueblo.
