So Ellis came home from school yesterday with news that he would not be able to participate in his class pictures because his hair is too long. He went on to say that there is a particular standard for boy's hair that is strictly enforced - forehead must fully show, hair above the ears, no hair down the neck... Ellis brushed it off and was happy not to have his picture taken anyway. My belly still hurts from laughing so hard.... read more

Dietz family has adopted a sweet rythym to life in here Mexico. So easy to absorb oneself in the friendly, relaxed pace of living. Any sense of urgency stops when we get the kids out the door for school at 8am. Whether it is a trip to the store, or a visit to the Kid's Spanish tutor, ample time must be budgeted - or better yet, have no time budget at all. Any preconceived schedule or time allotment, shall simply return one frustrated. Those who are most successful adopting are those who let the breeze of the day carry them. School begins. This is exactly the adventure we imagined when we set out. Riding our bikes down some dusty streets, off to school in some foreign land, with kids they'd never met, speaking a foreign tongue. Ahhh, yes. Ellis began his Mexican school career at 18 de Marzo, the public primary school in San Pancho. Uniform required - navy pants, white collared shirt, black shoes. Ellis took to the uni in stride. Shocking for kid who wears a collared shirt only when he must to play golf at a course that requires one. His usual uniform back home - shorts (regardless of month or temperature,) tee-shirt, skate shoes, and a flat-brimmed baseball hat.
