Hola Gringos

Having left Mexico City by now, I can confirm it's a pretty cool town. Generally it felt pretty safe wherever we went, safer than San Francisco but with more of a buzz to it. We spent most of Friday just wanding about the town, and it's pretty diverse, with some cracking museums and architecture.

From Mexico City we took a bus down south through the mountains and clouds to Cuernavaca. It's a bit of a getaway for the rich Mexicanos - like a Brighton with no beach. Even Cortez had a house here. Unfortunately things got off to an inauspicious start for us.

The hostel we'd booked into was miles out of town. After eventually securing a cab driver who'd even heard of the place, we drove for miles through sleepy suburbs before being dropped off at the right address - though there was no sign it was a hostel, or had ever been one. To top things off, no-one was answering the phone or doorbell. We sat on the curbside for about 3/4 of an hour, debating whether the rabid dogs or the semi ferral children would devour us first. At this point I was

desparately trying to remember my marriage vows to determine whether it said anything about having to protect Natalie, or whether I could simply flee in time honoured every-man-for-himself fashion. (Mum - don't worry it gets better by the end of the blog.)

Eventually we managed to find our way to a main road, and successfully picked up a cab back into town. Like the hardened travellers we are now, the first thing we did was check in to an exclusive boutique hotel. Unfortunately they only had a suite available, which was ridiculously plush - basically a maisonette on two levels, overlooking a brilliant blue pool. Not quite the cockroach infested jail of the first few nights. We managed to justify the expense based on the tenuous fact that it was our 2 week wedding anniversary.

After a wander round the museums, we found ourselves in a lavish Italian restaurant, drinking AMAZING Argentinian Malbec. So we haven't really stayed true to the traveller ethos, but hey I'll make up for it and wear tie-die all week. Don't judge too harshly -I bet even George Orwell had the odd night at the Ritz while writing Down and Out in London

It's true, I'm really missing work right now...
