Monday, we took a cab to Morelia the capital of the state of Michoacán. This is a beautiful modern city with clean wide streets and impressive buildings but again we did not find much of interest. We all enjoyed a trolley tour of the city and took some pretty pictures but the one we failed to take was that of the city’s most ancient relic inside the cathedral - a five hundred year old statue - Senor de la Sacristia, an image of Jesus Christ sculpted by indigenes out of corn stalks and orchid nectar, capped by a gold crown donated by Phillip II of Spain. It has since been explained to us that Mexicans (and maybe others) bind corn stalks together with the nectar which serves as a glue then they are able to carve the images. I’d like to see this done. Anyway, here are a couple of photos – the first one is the pretty one – the second not so much:

Our cab driver – name withheld - was interesting. He told us that he lived in Seattle and is a new dad. His status in the U.S. is not legal but he had returned to Patzcuaro to visit his parents. We stopped by to see him again the next day. We wanted him to know that we understood his desire to live in the U.S. and that we are sympatric to his situation. He told us that his "wife" had called this morning to say she is coming down here. We urged him to get "legally" married so as to gain legal status in the U.S.
