The building at the end of this plaza is the Instituto Cultural de Cabañas, built between 1805 and 1810 as an orphanage and home for invalids. After about 150 years as an orphanage (and housing up to 3000 children at a time), it has also served as an insane asylum, military barracks and jail. The institute houses a museum and hosts dance festivals, drama performances and concerts.
