We had decided it was time to get out of town for a day and when we saw there was a fundraiser trip going to Mineral de Pozos, we knew our time had come. The money raised was going to rebuild the town Jaridin and in doing so, a bus ride and a tour of 5 homes opened up to us.
The day before, Friday, I had once again become very sick. It was a different kind of sick than the one before and sadly, I had to miss class and stay in bed all day. I hoped and prayed that I would feel well enough to attend the bus trip...and my prayers were answered.
The bus ride was only about 45 minutes and we were by far the youngest couple there (except for one other couple that we actually became friends with, but they are only here for a week.) Sadly, that is kind of becoming an issue for us and Ronnie especially. There are no other gringos our age around here. Everyone is retirement age or older. I haven't minded it yet, but it is nice to make a Star Wars reference now and again and have
someone know what you are talking about.
So anyways, we arrived in Pozos. This little mining town has been around for a long long time and during the time of the revolution, was abandoned. It is now a bit of a ghost town and is only half occupied. It is the new place for artists from SMA who can no longer afford the high rent prices, now call home. There are several restaurants, a few hotels and some great little galleries.
The first house we went to looked like a house from Tatooine (see? Star Wars reference). It is completely
green and is very affordable. The next house was a small little escape for some retired northern Californians. The third was a large artist's retreat that was for sale and rent. The next was a HUGE house with many bedrooms, fountains next to an old bull ring. It was for sale too of course for about $325,000. And finally we went to a house that has been occupied since it was built. The owner was there, a 100 year old woman, who was born there, as were all her children. She was excited to point out this birthing
bedroom.
Afterwards, we wandered around the town a bit then stopped for an excellent comida at a place called Los Famosos de Pozos. I had great Sopa Azteca and the best enchiladas verdes I have ever had. AND they had fresh pay de manzana! (Apple Pie) It felt so good to eat a big meal again after being ill. We then wandered around some more, looked in several galleries then headed to a cantina for some tequila. Next we got on the bus and took siestas all the way home. It was an enchanting little town and I could easily see myself staying there for a night or two.
In other news, I have graduated my first level of Spanish at Warren Hardy. I can't believe how much was shoved into our brains in such a short amount of time. I was going to take a couple week break and start session two at the end of August, but my current study partner is here until the end of August and has talked me into taking the next class starting Tuesday. *sigh* So much for a break! But I think it is for the better while all of
my newly learned Spanish is fresh in my mind.
A few nights ago, we had the biggest storm yet! Lightening was flashing like a stobe light and we even had HAIL! I was nervous of the power going out, so we turned off all our lights and lit candles. Check out the video attached to get an idea of how crazy it was. But at the same time, very exciting too.
I am now a muralist. Eleanor hired me to paint a mini-mural in her garden of a string of flowers and a hummingbird. It was really fun to do and I am glad that a part of us will be here forever. She liked it so much, she wants me to do another one in another part of the garden. Perhaps doing murals is something I should consider...
We are having our first visitor starting tomorrow. My dad is coming for 10 days for his first trip to San Miguel. We are looking forward to touring around a bit as we have been saving our pesos and not going out much. We are excited to have a face from home around a little bit too.
Fountain area in the HUGE house
they had free wine, beer and snacks...and they were trying to sell the house too
