La Bufa
what we rappelled down is La Bufa - the rock on the far right. Hola everyone!
Well another week has gone by and it has definitely had it's ups and downs. Last week's classes went by really fast - and I didn't really do anything out of the ordinary. I had a lot of homework, mostly because my Literature professor told us 2 weeks ago that we had 2 weeks to finish our novels - when we all thought we had the entire semester. Thankfully I had read about half of it - but that meant I still had about 125 pages left. I read "Como Agua Para Chocolate" - or "Like Water for Chocolate" - and it was a great book! I felt really proud of myself for reading an entire 250 page novel all in Spanish. I really didn't struggle too much and I learned a lot of new vocabulary. But it was a lot of reading - I don't think I've read a Spanish book since high school - when I read an american girl doll book... So it was a good accomplishment!
Then Thursday night I got sick... I came home from being at a cafe with friends, and I walked in the door and thought I was going
view of the city
as always, beautiful to throw up - and even though I didn't - I've been sick ever since. On Friday I had a terrible headache - and felt a little nauseous, and the headache still hasn't gone away. I spent a lot of time sleeping this weekend, and just lying around the house relaxing and watching lots of movies. (If you haven't seen Ratatouille - I highly recommend it!) But even though I slept a lot and relaxed, I still didn't feel better when I woke up Monday. So my seƱora took me to the clinic and I did a urine and blood sample. Of course because I have a fear of needles I almost passed out afterwards, so it wasn't exactly a fun experience. Everything was normal with my blood, but they found a bacterial infection in my urine sample - so I am on an antibiotic. So this is the reason for my headache and extreme sleepiness. I skipped classes on Monday and slept more, and each day I am getting a little better. I still have a slight headache but I am definitely starting to feel like myself. I'm actually surprised it took 2 months for me to finally get
sick, so I guess I shouldn't complain.
The one highlight of the weekend was when I hiked to la Bufa and rappelled. Even though I wasn't feeling great, I didn't want to miss out on this opportunity. It took over an hour to hike up to the top of la Bufa - and the view was absolutely amazing. La Bufa is located somewhat outside of town, so from the top you can see all of the city - and all of the gorgeous mountains that surround it. The hike was somewhat difficult - but everyone kept reminding ourselves that we hiked up a volcano - so we could hike up this. Once we got there, we split into groups to rappel. I was in the second group, which I wasn't thrilled about because that meant I had to watch people rappel and I got even more nervous! People would finish shaking, and some girls said they cried in the beginning. So this didn't help my nerves. Before I knew it I was on top of the rock and waiting for my turn. I got all strapped in and before I knew it I was standing on the edge of
a cliff, and couldn't believe I was about to do this. But I reminded myself that I had done the rip cord at Valleyfair, so I think I could handle this. It probably only took about 5 minutes to get to the bottom, but that was plenty long for me. I did really well - even though I was super scared the entire time. The first part there was rock that you "walked" down, and then it dropped off so you were just hanging out in the air. Even though it was very scary, it was a great experience and I'm so glad I did it!
So that's about it here. Not much exciting is coming up. We don't have any more excursions or activities the month of October - but on the 8th starts a 3 week international festival here in Guanajuato. I've heard it's pretty crazy here - that the population almost doubles during this time - as people come from all over the world. There are lots of performances, exhibitions, and all types of cultural events. We have some tickets for various performances, so it should be interesting. But I'm not looking forward to all of
the people. Most people here in Guanajuato that I've talked to don't particularly enjoy the festival because of all the people - so we'll see.
Hope you are all doing well! I passed the 2 month mark on Saturday...which means I have about 2 1/2 more months to go.... Ciao!
