Tuxtla Gutierrez

We left the coast the day after Christmas and headed towards the Chiapas Highlands. Because it is about a twelve hour drive from the coast to San Cristobal de las Casas, we stopped for one night in Tuxtla Gutierrez.

The afternoon we arrived in Tuxtla there was a fair at the Zocalo, so for dinner we had fair food.

The next morning we went to the Regional Museum of Chiapas, which had a nice collection of pre-Hispanic and Colonial pieces on exhibit.

Other than the museum, there is not much more to see in Tuxtla. After visiting the museum we left Tuxtla and drove to San Cristobal de las Casas.

There is a modern highway which made the 2000 meter climb up into the Chiapas Highlands much better than anticipated. Probably we could have made it San Cristobal from the coast in a day, but the museum in Tuxtla was worth the stop and we felt more comfortable allowing more time than needed to travel in unfamiliar territory in the mountains.
