Shalom friends! Pardon me, I should be saying bonjur! I am not in Israel quite yet.
I currently am in layover mode at the Toronto international airport. My flight left from MSP this morning at 10:30 and I arrived into Toronto just short of an hour ago. My wonderful mom and dad said goodbye to me at the airport and I set off for my adventures! Leaving the MSP airport in itself was a minor hassle (Not that I mind travel hassles, just saying!) I was stopped at security due to a bike lock in my carry on luggage. A quick check of the bag and I was on my way.
I have already felt immersed into a cultural experience, and enjoy every minute of it! On my flight (I flew with Air Canada and will be flying with them to Tel Aviv), they spoke in English and French. I'm sorry to say, I did not pick up any French on my flight as I was watching Harry Potter and sleeping. Harry Potter was part of the small selection of movies offered in English. I thought I had been a small aircraft when I flew with Jetstar in Australia, but I was wrong. You haven't seen a small aircraft until you've flown with Air Canada's fleet. Anywho, I was happy to at least be served a beverage on this flight (unlike some past flights I've been on in the last week!)
My current location is an airport restaurant called Casey's. I was happy to see a Turkey Burger on the menu. Looks like Canada gets my approval as far as comfort food goes. My waiting time is nearly 5 hours so, let's get comfortable 😊 Happy I have my snacks including nuts, energy bars (note the picture on this blog of my newly favorite energy bar thank to my BFF Holly who introduced it to me), fruit (Which I was questioned about at Canadian border patrol!) a yoga journal magazine, and an oprah magazine. And my phone, of course. The technology of a smart phone is wonderful and allows me to already be in texting mode with my Israeli friends!
For those of you reading this who may not be familiar with my travel plans, let me fill you in. I am traveling to Israel to do volunteer teaching at a youth center with at risk children ages 8-11. I will be living in Tel Aviv and immersing myself into the Israeli life and culture. This is my second trip to Israel, as my first trip was in high school on Alexander Muss program in 2006. I look forward to this trip for many reasons, most importantly I look forward to seeing the Israeli friends my family has hosted over the past 6 summers. And the Isreali food! Hello falafel.
Feel free to follow my blog, comment, and ask questions! I'll try to update this as much as possible with stories, photos, and new Hebrew words I learn along the way!
I'll write to you in Israel friends. It's time to demolish my turkey burger.
Peace and love,
Ms. Sarah
