Freight train on the trans Canada highway Left Brook
9.30am for our drive to Moose Jaw - Saskatchewan.
There is not a lot to blog about this drive except to say it is a long drive on an open, flat highway with plain-lands everywhere you look. The sea of grains along the highway is sometimes interrupted by some dairy cattle or an oil drill but apart from that it is uneventful.
The trans Canada highway through Saskatchewan is in good condition and used by big rigs as well as everyday vehicles. The Canada Pacific also follows this highway and we saw numerous freight trains carrying many carriages along on their journeys.
The province of Saskatchewan is known as the "Land of the Living Skies". Most people use Saskatchewan as a way of getting to someplace else - which is exactly what we were doing. It was a hot clear day - good for driving - but when we stopped for lunch at a rest area along the highway we opened the back door of the RV to let some air in and we were swarmed by flies. Took forever to get them back out!
Along the way I decided I really should give Geoff

Arriving at Saskatchewan a break and try driving the RV. I was confident I could do it but when it came to the crunch I was completely thrown off by the width of the vehicle. Ended up only driving about 20kms or so before I handed the wheel back to Geoff. I think that's the end of my driving any RV in the near future.
Drove through several small towns - Medicine Hat, Maple Creek, Morse and Swift Current before arriving at Moose Jaw
at 4.30pm - this is an old town with not much to see so we decided to push on as we still had several hours of daylight left. We followed highway 6 to the port of Raymond which is the USA border crossing.
It was dark by the time we reached the border and it took about 1/2 hour for us to get through. Customs officers go through everything and we had to throw out a few food items that were not allowed in (citrus fruit and tomatoes). Also had to throw out some fire wood we had collected in Canada. They certainly go through everything with a fine tooth comb.
It was a long day of driving

The rest area! basically 12 hours on the road with only a couple of short stops. We are staying the night in a campground at the local fairground in Plentywood (border patrol told us about the place). It was pretty quiet place and we even got free electricity.
Filled the RV up with fuel just after the USA border crossing at $3.99 per gallon. $190 to fill up. From Calgary to Plentywood we have travelled 934km in a day and a half. All up we have driven 2,585kms since picking up the RV in Vancouver just over a week ago.
The next few days we will be exploring new territory in Montana and North Dakota before reaching our next destination of Minneapolis.
