…my directional nose failed me more than once
today and driving across the Island of Montreal was time-suicide … did not help that
the signage is a bit French, that it was rush-hour and that the info is designed for drivers who know where they are
going….actually drove thru ''the ditch' that I watched as the digging began in the early
sixties.
Autoroute #5 leads thru the ditch, directly to Pont Champlain, and the
south side of the Island of Montreal which is an escape route to the south shore of the St. Lawrence,
Sherbrooke and eventually New Brunswick.
Lost over two hours negotiating freeways…local roads … turn arounds… gas station attendants … and montreal sign-age!…
Was so frazzled had to stop and shop …
it was an instant cure … OK so it was only a
visit to Fabriqueville for more Velcro
but what a store … the Sudbury people are going to hear about this!!
...had a bit of a panic when I could not find my van ...pushed the panic button on the key and heard no reply ....really thought someone had stolen the vehicle. A young man who was
standing waiting for his ride ....the parking is beside a metro station ... kindly listened to my anxious rant ... and as I spoke out loud I realized I had moved from the original parking spot because as i was about to pull out I swa the Fabriqueville sign ... for a second time today. Decided I had better get what I needed.... may not see another such store.
Had not left the perfect B&B in Renfrew until10:05.
Was on a sugar high after a baked apple with loads of raisins and brown
sugar, two painted caramel white bread toasts and a muffin … drew the line at
the muffin… the microwave spinach quiche was delish! Coffee … not Nespresso.
Had to backtrack a few miles to find the bridge over the Ottawa to enter La Belle Quebec … fran-gle from now on …
Taking highway 148 was well worth the time…implemented my 80km/hr plan.
…saw lots:
One minute in Quebec …a herd of sheep
Five minutes in, Beehives and another set further down he highway
Ten minutes in, …roadkill … actually a lot
of it
during the whole day...skunk, squirrel, muskrat and a huge blood smear
all across the road …too big for a human fatality …must have been a moose :-(
Forty minutes in, LLAMAS!!
And the final surprise .... GOATS!
Beautiful farm yards
Messy farms
Great houses
and a man fetching his mail from a road side box in a black velour housecoat at 14:00
Highway148 was a great way to go until St.Eustache … then confusion set in …asked a few times …crossed the Pont Champlain
and
finally arrived in Marieville at the 100 year old Manoir Ramezay at 18:30.
Am now awaiting a house burger … just for you Mirjam! …served with poutine and definitely a second beer. Luckily did not
have a coughing fit in the restaurant but am having a duzzie of one back in the room.
The Micro cooler is plugged inand keeping the Havarti stiff.
....have had a shower … changed clothes and am looking forward to watching television from the comfort of a lovely bed. The. TV clicker fell to the floor …spilt its guts and
the battery has lost itself under the bedside table …that’s the end of TV …I am not crawling under there to look for the battery.
Tomorrow … onward to Levis
…. Another day closer to the commencement of my Great Maritime Adventure.
All pictures from the internet .... did not bring along the helicopter to take aerial shots!
