Riviere de Loup to Cabano May 07, 2016 Saturday
Cabano was once a lumber town with a sawmill and enough work for the inhabitants. according to french widipekia, "Cabano est un carrefour industriel, commercial et touristique au
Témiscouata. Il y existe un centre d'achat, Les Galeries Témis, ouvert en 1977.", carrfour meaning crossroads. Les Galeries is much like Place Bonaventure in Chelmsford near my northern Ontario hometown ... small, shops closed...displaying cars you could win with the purchase of a ticket. There seems to be an inordinate number of hotels, motels, and rooms for rent. Must be because of the "crosssings" of of highways going in four directions "
Rivière-du-Loup et
Edmundston au
Nouveau-Brunswick sur la
route 185 (
Route transcanadienne) et au carrefour des routes 232, axes routiers qui se dirigent à l'est vers
Rimouski et à l'ouest vers
Pohénégamook," https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabano. the english wikipedia had no such info.
It was an easy town to get to and I had a day of relaxation, puttering, not having to drive for hours and hours just to get to the next village/town .... am avoiding cities. Did I mention this will be 6008 km road trip? My math being what it is it may be
longer ...probably not shorterbecause of fascinating distractions along the route.
Left Cacouna for Cabano early. The people at the B&B were ever so nice and the breakie was wonderful. They spoke very little English and I really did not want them to suffer to long with my French because if there is a story to be told I will get it out any way I can.
Just down the street from the Gite de la Veilleuse stands a huge barn full to the rafters with antiques. Some of what I saw I already have … most I do not need and the rocker was too big to take with.
The trip to Cabano was 79km and I took a fast road. Stopped once to photograph an old geezers multi-coloured birdhouses. He was selling most of them for over 60$.
Drove thru the town of Cabano avoiding the Scout pails for donations … twice …in and out of the main street.
There are a lot of huge motor homes waiting to be opened and then there are spaces ready for Snow Bird returning from points south.
It was a quiet day, my first camping day
since this adventure began so the van had to be re-arranged. When I left Sudbury I just stuffed things into whatever space I could find.
Went for a walk all around the camp site … saw a lot of big snow patches … encountered standing water in the camping spaces and on the road … watched the man and woman who own the place work hard all day … did a laundry … discovered what is missing from my camping gear
like a lightbulb for the electric light inside the van and a folding chair …Its getting dark outside and I have to find my way back to the van. It is also after eight.
07:45 May 8 Happy Mothers’ Day
OMG a rabbit on the loose ….well actually a hare… and he is coming my way. At least it’s not a moose. There were so many moose signs on the highway I was feeling the effects of false advertising. With so many signs let me see at least one of the beasts.
Do not know what the hare is nibbling but he is doing it industriously. The grass is miniscule and the dandelions are miniature.
Memories Stirred
I love this old stove. When we lived in Foleyet such a stove heated the house and caused a pipe fire ...but that's another story. The day is looking good. Paid only 20$ for the night …so glad I cancelled the 120$ reservation at the Tamiscouata Lodge. And I ate my own food creation...sans tout la sucre! And a hefty price tag.
It’s Mothers’ Day. …am treating myself to a MacDonald’s Breakfast … don’t tell … and don’t count the sugar.
