Session 4 Gang
Group Photo at Centaur Stage Well, it's been awhile since I've written. Travelblog actually had a bit of a crash a little while back, being hit by a virus that wiped out most blogs from the past 3 months. I lost about 18 of mine, however, all but 1 has been recovered so that's good.
Life in Canada... little bit of a shocker to come home to. It wasn't even big things that shocked me. It was the little stuff like flushing my toilet paper, having soft pillows, walking on carpets, and drinking milk. It was a little strange at first but felt nice to be home. I visited family and friends. Sometimes felt like I'd never been gone and sometimes felt like Honduras was all a dream: another weird feeling.
Shortly after being home I was off to camp. Back to Centauri... my 6th summer. This year I was the Musical Theatre Program Director for session 4. I had a group of 17 girls between the ages of 9 and 14. They were fun kids to work with. I had a few space cadets and a few who needed lots of direction, but overall they were great kids and a hoot to work
Musical Theatre Campers
The 17 girls I worked with for 11 days with. We worked hard on a presentation all about the difficulties of growing up and facing the challenges of getting older. The girls wrote their own monologues on the topic, which we used as transitions between the scenes. I was super happy with the end performance. They were too.
It was good being back at camp. Seeing and spending time with old friends was awesome. I forgot how much I missed my camp friends. I was slightly stressed at first, as it was difficult running a program as well as teaching workshops every day but it was fun too. I did have a bit of a breakdown as I got closer to the Honduras banquet. Every session they have a cultural banquet and I agreed to run a Honduras banquet. It was a lot of preparation and work but it was a blast and the campers all had lots of fun. There were "carpets", pinatas, a banana eating contest, yummy food (tortillas, rice, beans, chicken, plantains, banana splits), folkloric dancing, a slideshow of pictures from my trip, a futbol match between counsellors and program directors, and then a Mayan folktale told by Julie. It was a great night and
My Birthday!
Check out the awesome candles! lol I had tons of kids coming up to me afterwards telling me that they wanted to go to Honduras to visit. Amanda was a huge help in making the night successful, as she helped me run it.
The program directors had a day off when the rest of the camp went on a day trip to High Park. A few of us girls (Amanda, Jeanette, Celeste, and I) decided to head to Niagara Falls for the evening. We had dinner at Hollywood Planet, browsed some stores, bought some fudge, and went to the casino. I ended up winning $30 on my favourite machine. Seems to be my lucky one. We had a fun night.
So camp came to an end with a great performance and a few days of cleanup. Now it's time to start in the real world. Here's what's planned for the upcoming year:
I'll be working 4 jobs.
The first is a nanny position. I'll be working M-F, 8-4 for a family in Waterloo. They have 2 children. Their daughter, Cadelle, is 1 and their son, Calin, is 4. Calin will be in junior kindergarten half days.
My second job is only 2
or 3 hours a week. I'll be tutoring at the Kumon Learning Centre for Math and Reading.
My third job is as a youth-drop-in leader at the Community Centre near my house. It's co-ordinating activities for the youth on Friday nights for about 5 hours.
My fourth job is as a dance instructor at the same community centre. I'll be teaching 6 different classes: 2 beginner hip hop classes, 1 advanced hip hop class, 1 adult hip hop class, kinder ballet (ages 4-5), and ballet (ages 6-7). I'm so excited.
It'll definitely be a busy year but I'm looking forward to it. It may be slightly stressful at times but I like being busy and this will definitely help me to pay off that debt of mine.
As for my Honduras friends, I talked to them often. Walter still calls a few times each week. I get e-mails from Pedro at the centre where we volunteered. Alma, my sponsored child is starting computer classes with Walter soon.
Alisa and I sent messages almost daily.
School has started in Honduras and I've been in contact with a couple of the remaining teachers as well as a few of my former
Le Vie Boheme!
Performing our camper-friendly version of "La Vie Boheme" from Rent. students. I do miss it at times.
So that's the update. It'll be a crazy year but I'll be sure to keep ya posted! Thanks for reading!
