Toronto is my Vacation (as they would call it here) Town. As Mini, Derry and Norma (girls I either lived with or worked with in Oz) all live either in the city or close enough to it so this is my catch up time.
The train up was good, didn’t really see much on the way up but the seats had good leg room and really comfortable. However even though we left on time 7.15 am in the morning we still managed to get into Toronto 5 hours late due to Customs and work on the tracks so didn’t get in till quarter to one into Toronto but it actually wasn’t that bad apart from the fact that I ran out of food, yes that right I made sandwiches, I’ve learnt from my past backpacking blunders so I decided to treat myself and get something from the food cart, BIG MISTAKE - it was the worse thing I’ve ever eaten basically a chicken sandwich zapped in the microwave it was soggy and try as I might to eat it, after one bite I had to throw it away. I still feel sick just thinking about it.
So finally got
to the hostel, where I booked in for the first three nights, its fine, a bit neglected and painted in the most vibrant colours that could easily cause a headache, got into my 10 bed dorm, it reeks but its a bed.
The next day I decided to book in for the rest of my trip to find out its the Toronto Film Festival this week and also the V Festival so the Whole of Toronto is all booked up, whoops maybe more research of Toronto was needed
So that Day I met up with Mini and Rob and ended up getting quite drunk but was a great night and loved catching up, I did go to my cousins donal bar but it was his day off so didn’t get to say hi but its a really nice bar but they had a comedy night going on in the back when we were there but no laughter obviously not a good night for the stand ups.
The next day we went to Toronto Island, its a 15 min ferry ride and lovely, a place where you can forget you are in the city, with park area and
beaches that look out onto the great lake Ontario, you would think its the sea you cant see the end even on the completely clear hot day like it was when I was there, I was so enthralled by the views I didn’t realise for a while that mini had taken me onto a nudist beach where everyone was being very athletic, running along the beach playing volleyball and they say that the Europeans are free with nudity. You can tell that the people that come here are regulars, not a tan line to be seen. We went out for Dinner that night with 2 girls that Mini works with to a restaurant randomly called Supermarket, it was lovely and I was so full after it that I just headed back to the hostel to pack my bags as I was being thrown out of the hostel the following morning. For those of you wondering if i'm about to end up living on the Toronto Streets, luckily not as the legends that are Mini and Rob are letting me stay at their house while they are in Mexico on their holidays, Thanks guys. Anyway so while i’m packing, one of
the girls from my room convinces me quite easily to head down to the hostel bar where I ended up staying till half 5 the next morning, it was a good night though.
So for the rest of the time in Toronto I did the tourist thing, CN Top of tower, the highest observation deck in the world where the floor is made up of Glass panels, looking down on the streets below. not for people who are scared of heights. checking out the celebs at the film festival and met Derry for Dinner. Unfortunately I didn’t get to meet up with Norma or Donal as time passed to quickly and when I went to the Donals pub again it was yet another day off, the boy has it easy out here, ahh well it gives me an excuse to visit again which isn’t a bad thing.
So today I'm getting the night bus back to New York at 11.15 this evening so having a boring day with washing and internet and meeting up with Derry before my mammoth bus journey of 14 hours but at least I'm in a hotel the following night to prepare for my
Trek, its unlikely that I will be able to update this as much as I can as will be camping and becoming one with nature so talk to you when I can, Cxx
