Day 93: Monday 7th. August 2006: Up early for the early flight to Halifax - no brekky today - queue for the flight OK but beeped when I went through the scan, but this time both of us had to have the full body check and bag check. Before I go through a scan I remove all my jewellery, coat, shoes etc. as I always get body searched due to my knee replacement pieces setting off the alarms. Also my backpack and camera bag get scanned and wiped for explosives - fun isn’t it!!! Vera not used to this invasion.
Never mind - it was onto this great little jet with the most comfortable seats one could hope for with a good flight to Halifax. We caught the airporter bus to town going via many suburbs - old, old and old - with poles, cables and wires everywhere; not quite what I had expected and ugly as.
We booked into the hostel and went on a tour of the city with Fred’s Hop on Hop Off Bus - a good way to get our bearings and see the many cemeteries!!! We went food shopping into a large super-mart, then
strolled along the fabulous scenic boardwalk along the waterfront to the Casino - Vera won - I lost as per usual. Back to the hostel for a late tea and bed and decide tomorrow’s itinerary. We had lost a whole day due to missing the plane yesterday, so we had to plan well what to do for the next couple of days.
Day 94: Tuesday 8th. August: Rain: Woke to a massive storm - lightning and thunder and rain to the max so stayed in and played Scrabble until it cleared a little. We had a visit to the Immigration Museum, where Vera found some names of people she knew; a visit then to the Citadel - a star shaped fort atop a hill overlooking Halifax and the harbour. Constructed between 1828 and 1856, it is where you see the military history in the various museums and a wonderful audio-visual display. There is a lone piper piping, schoolies pretending to arm and fire a cannon, groups dressed for the occasion marching to the drum beat, in fact, plenty to keep you amused and entertained for a couple of hours, not forgetting the splendid views. We walked home via the
Casino, along the 4 km boardwalk. Tired again so it was dinner and bed.
Day 95: Wednesday 9th. August: Sunny: A walk to the Harbour Taxi (ferry) and across to Dartmouth where we rode on Bus 60 to Fisherman’s Cove - we arrived there and the bus driver suggested we stay on while he drove through some of the more expensive suburbs which was very obvious by their look and the persons possessions before dropping us off at the stop where we would later get the bus for return trip. We went and had a look at the lovely little church and graveyard attached before taking a stroll around a boardwalk over the marshes where it was quiet except for the bird life. Then it was into the area of fishermen’s huts now utilized by locals to show and sell local arts and crafts which are not found elsewhere; plus the little cafes, restaurants and food outlets all making it a very pleasant spot and not many tourists yet. Vera had fish and chips, I opted for lobster in a fresh roll - hmm hmm absolutely delicious. We spent some time taking it all in before returning to Dartmouth
for a stroll around the parks on the waterfront. Back in Halifax we decided to go view the Public Gardens - a really beautiful place, and when we came to a section with a gate we thought we’d cross the road and go look in at the cemetery - a very creepy gloomy place with signs warning “tombstones could fall on you”, so it was a quick look and back to the gardens before heading home via the Casino. After dinner it was time to pack for the next move.
