Day 12: We’re staying three nights at Cabot Trail CG near Baddeck, NS so today and tomorrow at day trip days. Today we drove the Cabot trail counter clockwise so most of the “look offs” would be on the right side of the road. That strategy worked pretty well - - Only problem is that the important sites are listed the other way. Worked out OK. It rained lightly off and on most of the day. Gena and Charlie saw a Bald Eagle just as we were turning on to the highway from the campground about 9AM. We saw lots of beautiful rocky shore and tree covered mountains. The highest peak is 1745 ft. They were all close to the same height and were a plateau that had deep valleys formed by erosion. Makes for a ... read more

What can I say... the Cabot Trail and the Cape Breton Highlands are magestic, stunning, entrancing, beautiful...The riding is so varied. There are gentle turns with farm land, ponds and meadows; coastal highlands and low lands with pictureque fishing villiages and mountain terrain with twisty, steep turns. A riders paradise. We did the ride each of last two days. We are both a little sore, but so relaxed and content. We are so lucky. Tomorrow, we head to Grand Pre in the wine country. Just loving Nova Soctia.... read more

How did it get to be October?! It was a good night and I woke rested and eager for the day, the sun was coming out. I showered, walked the dog, disposed of garbage, etc. Left at 9:15 am. Off we went to Corby’s to get propane. It is the only place to get propane on this side of the park so I was really lucky it ran out yesterday. I filled up on gas too and the bill was $119.67. Stuff is REALLY expensive here. Headed north toward Meat Cove. It is the farthest point north and east in Nova Scotia and they had camping on a first come first served basis. It is 45 min on a dirt road so it was definitely an adventure. They didn‘t tell me the road was a mess. ... read more

Moose Day It was a dreary morning and so was my mood. If I have another rainy day I will scream! If that’s all that’s troubling me, how good life is. It was 9:25am before Oscar and I had our breakfast and took care of essentials. Then it was unplug, gather water in my containers and get on the road. Today we are heading for Cape Breton Island and yeh, the sun is coming out! We are on the Trans Canadian Hwy and it is 2 lanes cut as straight as it could be, the speed limit is 100 km, that’s about 65. Then I saw him, a huge, majestic, shinny black moose. He was just standing there about 50 yards off the road watching the crazy lady in the big white bus stop, back up, ... read more

When we got back to Halifax last night the Internet was down, seemingly across the city, so I wasn't able to post on our last day on the Cabot Trail until today. I hope I haven't forgotten too much! Downloading all the photos helps, though. We had been supposed to go sailing yesterday, but it turns out the last sailing tour was last week. So after breakfast, we got going to complete the entire circuit of the Cabot Trail, with many stops along the way for scenic views. This was our third day of beautiful weather in Cape Breton. It only began to rain after we left the island on our way back to Halifax. At one point we took a little ferry across a river, a cable ferry. It put me in mind of the ... read more

The sun came out this morning! Tour guide Ryan took us to a number of scenic lookouts and beaches today. The planned whale watching didn't take place until late afternoon, due to high wind early this morning. However, when Roberta and I discovered the boat was a zodiac we opted to stay on dry land, in a gesture of respect for our lower spines! Zodiacs are quite bumpy even in good weather. The four who went did see a lot of pilot whales, and came back with some great photos and videos of them. Tonight we feasted on crab, potato salad, and rolls, at the amazing cost of $12 per person! We were a bit dismayed this afternoon to discover that what we thought was the female dorm (where we slept last night) is actually a ... read more

At 8:00 this morning our tour guide, Ryan, picked us up at the hostel and together with five other adventurers, we set out for Cape Breton Island. Adventurers is the appropriate term, too. This is a bunch of travel aficionados, most of whom are at least two decades younger than we are. The conversation all the way to Cape Breton was about people's travel adventures. One young woman on this tour, Gina, a Californian, amazed us when she revealed that she is just getting back into hiking after nearly losing her life in a 150-foot fall three years ago when hiking on the Half Dome in Yosemite. You can see her story and pictures at http://http://theunfoldingself.wordpress.com/ We spent much of the day today traveling to and through the Cape Breton Highlands, with many stops along the ... read more

July 6 Martha did not tell us about the train. Or the very squeaky, creaky door that opened and closed by itself in the night. After getting up to close the windows and lock the door I managed to get to sleep in the charming and comfortable bed. In the morning, Sandra, our hostess, prepared a lovely breakfast of fresh strawberries, yogurt and scrambled eggs and when her back was turned we watched one of her cats climb up to lick the yogurt container. Sandra made our stay special with her eclectic art collection, antiques and animals. We left early for Prince Edward Island and were pleased to see sunshine greet us over the 8 mile Confederation Bridge to the island. Looking at the map and reading the materials I thought it would be good to ... read more
