Karl Snowboarding
Being towed through the powder. So since we last update the blog we have been eagerly awaiting the white fluffy stuff and we were very excited when we looked out the window the first week in December to see loads of it covering everything in sight! Since then we have got quite a bit more which is very exciting. Em had her first experience driving in snow that morning and by the time her day shift finished, there was at least a foot on top of the car and it was still snowing hard!! We found driving in the snow was a little like 4Wdriving in the sand but minus the 4WD. Oh so I guess we should mention that we bought a car (Karl is calling it a girl’s car) it is a little Ford Aspire, which is just like a Festiva. It is only a two door and is a 1995. We were hoping for a 4WD to feel safe in the snow and looked at a couple of Jeeps but they were not in as good condition. The car we got also has winter tires with good tread, which we have found to be very valuable in these conditions. Actually our little beast
Emma and Emma
Yes..it is true my good friend in Fernie is also called Emma. Even weirder her sister's name is also Sofie (different spelling to my Sophie). She is from Sweden. This is us at the local hockey game one friday night. seems more steady on the snow covered roads than the big 4wd's who often fish tail all over the place, so maybe the little car wasn't such a bad choice after all!
Em has still been working hard between the two jobs and went 3 weeks without a day off (and often working double shifts!). The restaurant has been up and down with how busy it gets but hopefully it will pick up when the season really gets going and some good tips start rolling in. She has now cut back to one day at Tim Hortons as the lack of sleep between the two jobs was getting a bit much. Karl has started his job as Maintenance at the Lizard Creek Lodge up on the hill. It is a 4.5 star resort with many condos. He was a bit overwhelmed at the start on how much there is to remember but since then he has found it a lot easier and most days pretty cruisy. He has to fix everything from light bulb changes to broken ovens. We had to get the car so Karl could get to and from work daily plus it will make getting up
the hill a lot more convenient as the alternatives were a shuttle or hitching.
The first weekend in December, when it did snow heaps Karl went out with some friends in their Ford Explorer in search of some tracks they could board/ski down. They ended up finding some forestry tracks and decided to snowboard but with a wake boarding style….they each took it in turns to get pulled behind the car and ripped their way through the powder. He came home with a massive grin on his face and an eagerness for more!
We had a couple of Christmas parties the other weekend to get us in the spirit. Really looking forward to a white Christmas, it will be such a different experience from the usual sweltering Queensland Christmas we are so accustomed to. Hoping to have a big traditional Christmas dinner feast with some friends here as Em has the day off and looks like Karl is working which is a bummer but hopefully he can come home a little earlier than expected??
The resort opened on the 8th so we have been going up every chance we get. We have managed to get up there
Our house
We live in the basement suite about 8 times so far. The first day not many runs were open as the rain came shortly after that dump of snow we mentioned so it was still pretty icy up there. Since then we have got a lot more snow and a lot more runs are open but still more to go. On the Thursday just gone by the powder was unbelievable, on one track we cut through some snow near the trees and it was up to Em’s waist!! Em has improved already in the short time since it opened and is onto blue runs which we didn’t think she would be for a while (it goes green as beginner, blue: intermediate, black: advanced). Karl has been flying down the blue and went down a black run the other day.
Anyway that is about it from us, be good for Santa and finally…..let it snow!
P.S.
Sorry it is a bit late but after all it is still christmas eve here!!! ; )
