After Costa Rica we flew into Lima. We were expecting something like San Jose but were quite pleasantly surprised when the taxi pulled up at Miraflores, an area within Lima. It was much more clean and up market than we expected. The smog was quite a shock though. We ended up staying a few days to make some arrangements to travel on from there. The next stop was Nazca where we were lucky enough to get on a small plane to go overhead the Nazca lines (or signs as our hostel owners told us). It was amazing and very worth it. The plane ride in itself was pretty crazy and I think our stomachs were still doing flips for a while after!! Nazca itself was a pretty cool city and we enjoyed just hanging about in ... read more

We left our 'home away from home´ i.e. Canada and began our transition of a local back to being a tourist. It felt a bit weird leaving Canada after being there for so long. Despite everyone warning us about the Greyhound buses we had a free ticket and so we wanted to take advantage of it plus we knew it would be nothing like the buses that were about to come. In Seattle we enjoyed the Pike Place Markets and for once it wasn´t raining in Seattle. We only planned on a night stop over but due to some planning problems...i.e. none! The bus south was full so we were forced to stay an extra night. Another bus ride and we were in San Fransisco. What a place! It was all of what we had been ... read more

Leaving Fernie

What a season we had Fernie. We had over 10 metres of snow! It was unreal, with so many powder days and heaps of them over 30cm. One week in early February everyday was a powder day with one of them being 44cm…out of control! Mind you on that same day it was pretty cold, nearly -40 C with wind chill. Though when there is that much powder I don’t think anything would have kept us away! We did call it quits early when the end of Karl’s nose turned white from frostbite though. Luckily by the time he got down to the day lodge it had turned back to normal. All up Emma did 51 days of riding and Karl did 60 days. We both improved a lot in the time. Emma did her first ... read more

Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. We spent Christmas Eve having a few drinks at the pub after work and then Christmas Day we had a bit of a sleep in and enjoyed opening our pressies from family. Instead of going boarding we hit the hot tub at our place with another couple (Emma and Brent). We enjoyed relaxing in there for a few hours drinking our traditional Swedish Christmas Drink. That night we went over to a friends place and we all had Christmas Dinner together and yes it was a truly white one, it did snow! We had some Aussie visitors for New Years- Laura, David and Katie all joined us for for a few days. It was so great to have them here to help us celebrate. We had ... read more

December 22nd 2007

So since we last update the blog we have been eagerly awaiting the white fluffy stuff and we were very excited when we looked out the window the first week in December to see loads of it covering everything in sight! Since then we have got quite a bit more which is very exciting. Em had her first experience driving in snow that morning and by the time her day shift finished, there was at least a foot on top of the car and it was still snowing hard!! We found driving in the snow was a little like 4Wdriving in the sand but minus the 4WD. Oh so I guess we should mention that we bought a car (Karl is calling it a girl’s car) it is a little Ford Aspire, which is just like ... read more

Ok so we have been pretty slack in updating the blog- sorry! Here is a bit of an update leading on from the last entry: After enjoying our time east it was time to head back to the west. We had a couple of days in the big smoke in Toronto. Whilst it was good to see, neither of us were overly impressed by Toronto as it is just one BIG city but didn’t have too much appeal for us (unless maybe we were loaded and could go out on a big shopping spree, which for the record we aren’t). We experienced some temperatures that made us feel we were back home 31 C and so humid! Whilst in Toronto we didn’t do too much apart from wander around, go to an amateur comedy night and ... read more

Before departing Vancouver we were blessed with a gorgeous sunny day so took the opportunity to finally use the voucher Karl got Emma for her birthday ( max out the visa card ) to go on a seaplane overlooking Vancouver. It was such a fantastic experience as it gave us a different perspective of the city . It was also cool to see the mountains close up and some surrounding islands. We left Vancouver that afternoon and headed on the Greyhound overnight to Banff where we were greeted with a chilly awakening- it was 10.30am and only 4 C, a little different to the 24 C we had experienced in Vancouver the day before! How naïve had we been in leaving behind our warm winter/snow gear in Vancouver (we had discussions in the storage facility where ... read more

We arrived into Victoria after finishing up work in Vancouver. We ended up staying almost a week to give Karl’s feet a chance to heal before embarking on our cycling tour. We did a few touristy things (with Karl hobbling along) like visiting Government Building for BC, which was pretty interesting; visited the amazing Butchart Gardens; wandered around the village like atmosphere, it’s a really pretty city. In amongst playing tourists we also had to prepare for the cycling trip by purchasing tent and camping gear, organizing bikes and finalizing our route. We left Victoria, all loaded up, in the rain and early in the morning to beat the traffic! We headed off on the Galloping Goose, which was originally the first train network in BC, but now as no longer active has been converted into ... read more

Well firstly before we update you with this blog we should probably explain especially for those of you who subscribe to our blog, that the Travel Blog site went down last week and lost everyone’s blog sites- NOOO! Luckily we were able to do the time consuming process of recovering ours and re-post them so this is why our loyal subscribers would have received many emails notifying you of the re-posting (sorry if this was confusing for you). We are hoping that the problems with the site will not continue- fingers crossed. Anyway this combined with our usual slackness have put a delay in updating the blog which was most overdue. Since our last blog we have been up to a few things. We went to the Calgary Stampede for the last four days (July 8th ... read more

Well we are still in Vancouver but we have moved to ANOTHER place! This time we should be here for two months (up until August 13th). It is a one bedroom apartment still in downtown but in the west end. It is a nicer aspect than the last place and it has some views out to the water and sunset which is very nice. Still expensive but as we mentioned in our last email it has been really difficult to find share or cheaper accomodation. Apparently the rental market is similar to back there- 97% occupancy rate. We experienced a bit of drama prior to moving in however, which was not funny at the time but was the next day! The night before we were to move again we tucked into our temporary bed early (9.30pm) ... read more
