Scenic mountains were all along the first 1/2 of our drive up to Jasper NP.
We’re on the road- CA 1 to the C5 toll road. The toll booth operator was funny - asked if we had anything to declare. We said no (middle of BC?) and he said ‘that’s OK, I’m not a border, just bored”. J The last mile of climb before the booth was very steep for a highway but the RAV4 made it! An extra 2 cylinders in the engine would have certainly have helped though! The drive from Abbotsford was very beautiful - lots of huge mountains and scenic valleys. There were a lot of boulders and rock slides as well as tall fences to keep wildlife off the highway. We only saw a lot of moo-cows… Greg says that this is a large ranching area. Observation - a lot of places in Canada take AmEx (no CaEx?). Exchange rate - 1USD -> 1.05CND. There is a Costco in Kamloops (middle of the high desert)… kind of strange. There is a big tree blight in BC from the pine beetles. Strong trees can produce enough sap to defend themselves but the trees in these areas are not doing too well… ½ the forest is brown. It’s very desolate and sad to

see. Just past Little Fork we saw a black bear along the north Thompson river. As we pulled over it ran into the woods. Greg said it was probably scared of the train that was coming up the valley. Cute! We got a picture of it’s butt. A little further on we saw a large bald eagle beside the river - it was the first time that I had seen one so low before.
Mt. Robson is the tallest peak in the Canadian rockies and we were busy looking at it when we got pulled over by a RCMP from tiny town… he was hanging out in his favorite speed trap. 100km/h was the speed limit but there was a 50ft ‘avalanche zone’ where the speed limit supposedly drops down to 70km/h. Fortunately the ticket was not too expensive because the cop decided to be ‘nice’ to us. It was an obvious speed trap and the town’s source of income. Greg was not too pleased with the ticket!
