Hole in the floor
my first! make sure you plan ahead to avoid the splash I absolutely loved Turkey, especially Istanbul, and I'm really sad about the problems they are having at the moment. I hope a peaceful resolution is reached because I really would LOVE to visit again! Until then, here the observations I've had in my head in Istanbul and Pamukkale:
1. Turkish people don't seem overly nice, but they are pretty helpful, open and tolerant. They are fiercely proud of their city and country. It's hard to believe sometimes that this is a primarily Muslim country because it is so liberal. Almost all older women from the country wear some sort of head covering, but almost no young women, and few city women in general wear head coverings. Alcohol is plentiful. The call to prayer is long, but people seem more of the opinion to live a good moral life than to devote time to physical prayer.
2. Driving in Turkey has got nothing on Qatar. I was told Turkey would be a scary place with regards to crazy drivers - I see more nuts driving in my daily 20 minute morning commute than I did the entire time I was in Turkey. I think it's more that Istanbul is an
old, hilly city with narrow roads, so you have some people who go pretty fast and it can seem frightening.
3. The Ataturk Airport wasn't the worst, but wasn't the best either. Most people I'd encountered were at least somewhat friendly and all helpful elsewhere; the airport workers seemed to take perverse delight in making your entry/exit as difficult as possible. And not a single worker in either of the airports cracked a smile.
4. Turkish food is delicious! I have converted into a grilled lamb lover. It was also generally inexpensive. Try the pides for sure.
5. Turkish older men are pigs. Do they really think I am going to hook up with them using their brutish pick up lines - trying to be Italian suave and only looking pervy? Does this actually work for them???
6. The Denizli airport is actually in Carduk. Which is at least 45 minutes away. Plan accordingly!
7. Tourists are everywhere! Maybe April or early May is the best time to go...
8. The weather was phenomenal and Turkey is much bigger than I realized. Definitely a destination for all you travelers. I would love to rent
a car and drive around the country one day!
9. Ferman Hotel is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in and it was not very expensive. The Artemis Yoruk Hotel was not the best, and was inexpensive, but as mentioned yesterday, it works for a stopover - it is very near everything and has a lot of amenities.
10. I was in Istanbul for three days and very busy the entire time and I still didn't get to see everything. If you come from far away, keep this in mind. For me, it's a four hour flight and I will be back on long weekends at some point.
