The city of Istanbul was established as Byzantium in 667 BC. From 330 AD to 1453 AD, during the Roman and Byzantine period, and after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 AD, it was called Constantinople. It received its current name in 1930.

Located on the Bosphorus Strait, it now boasts a population of over 11 million, being the fourth largest city proper in the world. It is the only city in the world located on two continents - Thrace on the European side of the Bosphorus River and Anatolia on the Asian side.
