Day 16: We got picked up and shipped off to our hotel in Goreme. It is called the Shoestring Cave Hotel, one of many cave hotels in the area. We had to wait until about 1030 to receive our room which is as stated, in a cave. Naturally, after another 10 hour bus ride, we took a 3 hour nap when we got our room. Here are some facts regarding caves, the positive thing about sleeping in a cave is you never get too hot. The bad thing, the cave is very humid and without a dehumidifier things get very damp. We have started to store our clothes in plastic bags to keep them relatively dry.
When we awoke we decided to venture around the town and see what it had to offer. We stopped at this really cook restaurant which served what can only be described as a stew in a clay pot that they broke open with a hammer for you to eat it. It was a unique experience and the food wasn't all that bad either.
After a very early dinner something caught Terri's eyes. We found a place where we could rent scooters and go
ripping around town. We filled out the necessary forms and took off on our scooters. Now a Tilley hat and helmet don't go hand in hand so we headed back to our hotel to drop some things off and pick up some money for gas. On our way back to the hotel we missed our turn and had to hang an "Ursula" to get back on track. Keep in mind that this is my first time ever on a scooter and the turning and throttle combination wasn't quite mastered. I somehow managed to stall the automatic scooter and proceeded to roll down the hill without the engine running. At the bottom Terri showed me how to start the scooter and we went to our hotel. After getting what we needed I went to start the scooter with my new found knowledge, or so I thought. I ended up flooding the engine and we had to call the rental company to bring another scooter. Okay, now we are off to the races. We rode up hills and down hills and on paved roads and dirt roads. We toured around the sites in Goreme and then hit the highway to see some
different things. The scenery in Cappodocia (The area that Goreme is in) is amazing with all the fairy chimneys and cave dwellings. Again, the pictures will have to do the talking. We filled up our scooters at approximately $2.40 a litre (very expensive to drive here) and headed back to the rental place. It was a bit of a steep learning curve but I came out without damaging myself or the bike. Terri wasn't so much of a worry since she has driven motorcycles before.
Needless to say it was a blast and we are thinking about doing it again on Sunday; our last day here.
In the evening we went and had some well deserved Baklava and ice cream.
Now we get to see what it is like to sleep in a cave...

Hi guys, your blog and pictures are great. We are heading off to Turkey in Sept this year and I just wanted to ask you about hiring the scooters. Did you need to have a driving license?? And can you remember how much they cost to hire?? Lastly, where did you hire them from? thanks Cindy
