Background: A former British colony, Cyprus received independence in 1960 following years of resistance to British rule. Tensions between the Greek Cypriot majority and Turkish Cypriot minority came to a head in December 1963, when violence broke out in the capital of Nicosia. Despite the deployment of UN peacekeepers in 1964, sporadic intercommunal violence continued forcing most Turkish Cypriots into enclaves throughout the island. In 1974, a Greek-sponsored attempt to seize the government was met by military intervention from Turkey, which soon controlled more than a third of the island. In 1983, the Turkish-held area declared itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," but it is recognized only by Turkey. The latest two-year round of UN-brokered direct talks - between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities to reach an agreement to reunite the divided island - ended when the Greek Cypriots rejected the UN settlement plan in an April 2004 referendum. Although only the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot-controlled Republic of Cyprus joined the EU on 1 May 2004, every Cypriot carrying a Cyprus passport will have the status of a European citizen. EU laws, however, will not apply to north Cyprus. Nicosia continues to oppose EU efforts to establish direct trade and economic links to north Cyprus as a way of encouraging the Turkish Cypriot community to continue to support reunification.

There and back again Middle East » Cyprus » Paphos
Well, so much has happened. Having settled into the apartment, time passed by. The weather was still decent. The temperatures were generally above 15°C most days and not much below 10 overnight. A fair amount of rain, which generally fell in massive deluges. The Island being short of water, this is a good thing. The reservoirs, which were at 5% of capacity when we arrived, were at 16.1% when I left. Apparently better than last year. On the 7th February, 2009, we awoke to find that a number of items had been stolen from the apartment whilst we had slept. Lost [View Full Entry]

We walked north today to get a different feel for larnaca since we have been to town every single day. The northern beaches are where all the resorts are, just wanted to see what we were missing. IT was a hot and windy day and we sat on the beach and enjoyed the oceans blues and greens. We both did not want to be walking in the heat of the day so we got back to the hotel around 1:30 and was ready to go to the pool and chill out, but instead we hung out and took naps. I honestly [View Full Entry]

Venturing into town round two. We decided that we were deff not walking this time. I went to bed dredding that walk thinking I would have to do it again today.. not only once, but twice. So we waited for the bus and noticed that it does not come every 1/2 an hour we were waiting at least 40 min. We got into town in 5 minutes instead of forever it was so much nicer. We went to the promenade since there was going to be traditional Greek dancing and it was pretty cool and then we went to the beach [View Full Entry]

After gregorys we came back to plan the next couple days of our vacation. Tx started to tell me about a couple ideas but I couldnt keep my eyes open I was sleeping by 10;30.. then we got a knock on the door around midnight or so asking for Constance. It was kinda comical in away because the guy was so delirious that he knocked on the wrong door. When we asked what can we do for him he looked at us like he was a deer in headlights. The 4/4 we woke up early because breakfast was only being served [View Full Entry]

This cathedral has a pristine white interior, and features Ottoman minarets added to the exterior.
Turkish girls are very mysterious. I flew from Van to Istanbul to catch a connection on the next flight bound for Cyprus. So anyways, the girl at the airport check in does her thing on the computer with passports and stuff, then while looking straight at me without talking she reaches towards my face. Self consciously I started flicking at my chin, as I'd just spent three days in Van without a mirror and god only knows how I looked. She keeps looking at me silently, reaches out further and lightly touches my hair with her hand. It was all very [View Full Entry]

In July of 2008 I spent about 11 days in Cyprus. I was lucky because a good friend of mine, Theano, is from Cyprus and was there when I visited. She and her sister, Petroula, were great tour guides and I was fortunate enough to get to spend time with their family and to eating great meals with them! I was also able to visit with families of two other friends Maria and Theodora and I felt like all I did was eat . . . Maria's Mom makes the best cake! . . . and Theodora's family had so much [View Full Entry]
