At long last I have visited Venice! From Trieste, two hours on the high-speed motorway brought us to within sight of the island. Beautiful
I have a massive soft spot for Venice despite the massive crowds. Your description of meandering through small lanes and finding fabulous shops brought back lots of happy memories of getting lost in Venice :)

Impressions
I've heard of St. Mark's but never bothered to look it up - it strikes me as "eastern" in its decoration. I see similarities with some Russian and Ottoman architecture. Maybe that's my imagination - and/or attributable to my lack of architectural knowledge which means I don't see the differences. It looks like you had a beautiful day for your foray, but I'm with you on the crowds. No thanks.

Russians and Ottomans and Venetians were trading powerhouses - the influences between those cultures and others are many.
