Day Two
Today, we awoke at the highly reasonable hour of 10 AM. Canadian time.
For those of you not inclined towards math, that’s about 3 PM Scottish time. Which means I’ve already adjusted to the time difference. Mom, not so much.
We got up, got dressed, and headed out to embrace the city. And by “embrace the city”, I do mean “get hopelessly lost at least once”.
We attempted, with some success, to find a Scottish branch of RBC. We got directions from a fabulously moustachioed barista at a Starbucks (whose menu was incredibly foreign to me, much to my dismay), who pointed us in the direction of Canning Gate. There was some confusion on both parts because we weren’t looking for Canning Gate, we were looking for Canning Street. It appears that there are multiple streets with the same name (Lord help you if you’re looking for St. Lawrence Anything, because I counted at least three variations).
After finding the building RBC was in, we discovered that it wasn’t actually a branch, it just dealt with pensions and the like. On the plus side,
V. Good lawyers.
Dad, I feel like you should be part of this the view from the office was A+. I really dig the views around here. I’m completely spoilt for choice though. Like, from the fourth storey or higher in any building you’re guaranteed to see at least one really cool looking landmark or church or piece of architecture. It’s endlessly thrilling.
We got instructions from the RBC woman to go to the Bank of Scotland and we did our best to follow them. Of course, within the first two seconds, we were again hopelessly lost. After a while meandering and debating whether or not 4:30 pm was an appropriate time to have breakfast (it totally is, by the way), we found a BoS branch that was probably not the one that we were looking for. We went in and they told us that it was too close to closing time to attempt to open a bank account because there was no one available to help us. So we went to the competition: the Royal Bank of Scotland.
After slightly less meandering but by no means more direction (i.e. we were still lost), we found an RBS. When we tried to open a bank account there,
Burke and Hare Strip Bar?
Murder? Nah; SEXY murder. we still couldn’t only this time it was because I don’t have a bank letter from my school. It’s like they don’t want me to live here.
So after that nonsense, we went to find food. The first place we tried was a karaoke bar and that is so not our scene so we moved on to a different place. The next one wasn’t serving food for another 15 minutes, so we found a third place. It appears that third time really is the charm for us in our culinary adventures. We found ourselves in a slightly greasy pub with mediocre food, but we weren’t expecting much and they provided free Wi-Fi, so I don’t really have any complaints. Mom had a sandwich and I had a chicken burger. I did not have alcohol (see Dad, I don’t drink all the time). We got directions to the main shopping thoroughfare from our waitress and continued our streak of getting lost even though we had people guide us on where to go.
Eventually, we got to Prince’s street (the thoroughfare in question) and got me set up with a new sim card. A super cute boy sold it to me; Mom and I had a good giggle about it because we are apparently twelve. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work because my phone is region locked. If any of you know how to unlock it, please let me know.
Anyway, we were on our way home when we were stopped in the street by a guy who gestured at us and went “you two’s are beautiful and that’s all that matters” or something to that effect, then walked away. It wasn’t at all threatening or creepy and seemed sincere. Mom has been over the moon since, and has taken to quoting him at random times. I think he told us that because he thinks we’re lesbians (something that happens to me quite a lot actually, and it’s rather unfortunate) and wanted to congratulate us on our courage but Mom insists it’s because he thinks we’re the epitome of perfection.
I think we all know who’s right here. (Hint: It’s me because I’m the one who runs this blog so I have to be the right one.)
Anyway, we got home, settled in for the night, watched some telly (Mom wanted to go out to a pub for a pint, but I was tired. Suck it, expectations of age), and Skyped Dad, as well as a good friend of mine named Shalin, who(m) I miss dearly. Mom went out to get dessert (strawberries, assorted brownies, and some cider for me and wine for her. Sorry Dad, I guess I do drink all the time. Cheap stuff too. I must be an embarrassment to you) and we hung around.
Late at night, Payton (my darling and wonderful bestie. Being apart from her is devastating {Happy, Pay Pay?}) Skyped me and I attempted to cause my mother the least amount of disturbance by taking the call while sitting in the bathtub.
And that’s where I am right now, contemplating the mysteries of life, fully dressed in an empty bath.
Good night and good luck, dear readers.
