The gates of Edinburgh Castle.
For my birthday in 2006 Badda Baz surprised me with a trip to Edinburgh. I must say he was very good at hiding the surprise even when I’d slip the odd “so where are we going this weekend” in every now and then. He was even still quite coy when I asked him what I should pack - bikini? Er, no. Oh 😞 I mean, yay! (Obviously). But when I asked whether or not I should pack my passport, the cookie crumbled. We’re staying in the UK! And where have I been wanting to go? You guessed it.

An end of October weekend in Edinburgh is pretty damn cold but thankfully the city is also very small so it doesn’t take long to get from place to place. Couple that with the fact that it’s Scotland and they have just as many, if not more, pubs every 10m than London, and you have a warming pub tour around a very charming city that happily staves off the jitters.

Since Baz had been here once before, for Hogmanay, he decided he would be my tour guide. It didn’t take long for him to realise that he didn’t actually see anything

the last time he was here. Although he did know a great bar! We spent a good day wandering around Edinburgh castle, set on top of one of the seven hill with pretty breathtaking views across the other hills and into the valleys.

We also did a walking tour through the vaults, which were built under the roadways. That was pretty amazing, tales of the body snatchers and aristocratic rape brotherhoods and how these were originally built for the workers to live in. There are also plenty of ghost stories that go with a place like this and although a couple of people on our tour claimed to have seen or felt something, Baz and I felt quite comfortable, if a little chilly.

There’s not much else to do there except wander around so we spent the rest of the time “discovering” little pubs off the beaten path.

The highlight? My birthday dinner, seafood :D
