well after staying up and packing, showering and etc, it was about 2:30 inthe morning before we were done and a cab was coming to take us to the airport at 4am, so we really saw no point in sleeping. so after a sleepless night, our flight was from 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning from dublin to edinburgh, scotland. we managed to find the bus to take us to the city centre and checked into our hostel after walking from the bus quite a ways. At this point we are starting to feel the drag of traveling.....while traveling itself is amazing and a great experience...the transistions between destinations are annoying, and our backs and feet are hurting a bit.
anyways, enough complaining, and besides...the weather in scotland was amazing!! everyone kept telling us that it was very unusual.....(but we knew the real reason...its cuz we brought the sunshine from cali). well
we stayed at Brodies Hostel right in the center of the Royal Mile and walking distance to virtually everything in the city! we couldnt check in to our room just yet because of the earliness of our arrival, which blew because we were beyond exhausted. But not a
Arthur's Seat
We're going to climb that... big deal because we knew this would probably be the case. So we left our luggage there (thank goodness =]) and went in search of food. We found the Bank Hotel that served a two for one (gotta find the deals when on a budget!) traditional scottish breakfast. eggs, bacon, toast, baked beans, a fried tomato, and also Haggis. Haggis is pretty much just all the left over parts of the animals..including any and all internal organs. Somewhat of a specialty for the scottish......maybe for americans,...ours is the hot dog? well in anycase it wasnt very good. Black pudding is also served which is looks like a cooked cake thing, much like the haggis, and kelly said it was cooked blood. Whose? hmm well im not sure, my guess is animals from which they took the internal organs from....ewwww.
Moving on....
We did a bit of souvenier shopping, headed back to the hostel, checked in and crashed for about three hours, it was glorious. We then walked to Arthur's seat which was an amazing cliff that overlooked all of edinburgh. Before we got to it though we stopped at the "Peoples Museum" which smelled funny and had some
Queen's Gate
Let us in!!! creepy looking manicans, but held some awesome information about scottish history. Arthurs seat was right above the Scottish Parliament and the Holyrood Palace, both of which were gorgeous. we walked up and around the cliffs, taking as many pictures as we could. when we got down we rested at a park and enjoyed the beautiful weather. While walking back to our hostel, along the Royal mile we stopped at a few shops, Sarah got a necklace from a celtic witch shop. no joke, this place had a crystal ball and mystic books and everything.
For dinner we made our way down to the Castle Arm's Restaurant which gave a great discount for backpackers and had amazing food. The Elephant House was our next stop and this is where J.K. Rowling wrote some of the Harry Potter novels! It is a very popular cafe and we got some great hot cocoa and coffees. Later on in the night, around 10:00, we went on a tour called The Terror Tour. It is an tour through the underground, led by a costumed guide who tells about the gruesomeness of the history of Scotland. The underground is haunted...so they say. They told stories of
Hiking up the cliff
Overlooking the city the old times when it was illegal to be homeless so everyone poor person was sent to the undergroud vaults. Down in these vaults were disease, murders, and many unspeakable things. THe creepy part was is that it is haunted still 'so they say'. The guide said they have had occurences on most of their tours where people will come out scratched or in some cases with welts, bruises and really bad gashes. Now these happen nowadays, we were pretty skeptical until something little happended on ours.......
while in one of the vaults, one of the girls started screaming (which made all of us scream), and she said it felt like someone threw a stone at her face. Her friend said she had also felt like someone nudged her out of the way to get to the girl who felt the stone. When we got out of the vault and into the pub up top, we looked at her face and sure enough there was a small welt and a cut in the center, looked exactly like someone threw a stone...in the picture you can see it pretty well. weird....
/later on that night we checked out a few
different pubs, including a lame kareoke bar, and a live band venue where sarah was propositioned for drugs....
it wasnt a late night.... =]
