We spent the rest of the afternoon parked up in the aire /camping area . We left Gabby and set out for a walk up the shoreline which was criss crossed with paths . The signs warned us not to walk on the shoreline . The mud was treacherous and the quicksands would grab you and suck you down. The tide was out a long way but it could come in at short notice and cut you off from the shore . It was a dangerous bit of coastline . We kept to the waymarked paths . The season seemed later here . The blackberries were well out and the leaves beginning to take on autumnal colours .
We saw a few people walking along the way. The sea was always on our left and the mountains of England in the distance .
We were joined by a few more vans before it got dark . A older van parked up. The couple went for a walk taking their two dogs with them . They left behind a cat . We watched it with interest as it waited for them to return . Two bikers turned up and pitched
their tent in the woods . I wondered where they went when they wanted the toilet in the middle of the night . They should not have been there but they chose to break the rules of only self contained vehicles staying overnight . How many times do we see the rules being broken ? We were joined later by a van driven by a Yorkshire couple . They set up and sat outside . With all the room on the aire they parked up to us . They stayed up late and opened and shut the sliding door so many times we almost went to tell them to be quiet . As lovely as the place was there was always going to be someone who disregarded rules . Or was it us being too particular at keeping to the rules .
We did however sleep well although it was a touch cold overnight . We were not sure how much gas we had . One bottle looked empty and there was nowhere local to fill it up. We woke at 8am . Slightly later than at home . It was a fine day and after breakfast I walked
over to the water supply and filled up a couple of bottles ready for the day ahead . I fell into conservation with the cat and dog lady. She told me she loved our van . They had an old one and were fed up with having to make up the bed every night, They travelled with the two dogs and the cat who was harnessed to take out for a walk every day. They lost the cat sometimes and it was hard to get her back . We talked about motorhomes and how lovely the aire was . How lucky we were to find it . They had a month off work and were travelling to Largs where they had found a free spot by the seafront . Then on to Inverness and over to Harris and one other island . She wondered if after a month she and her husband would still get on living in a such a small space .
Talking to people whom you would never normally meet is one of the good things about being on the road . We pulled the steps up, started the engine on Gabby and set off for our first stop of Day 2 - an abbey further round the coast .
