Have been having Hotel Ennuie ...was in such a funk that I had difficulty being positive about the whole Newcastle experience.
And that at a $325.09 - 189GBP price tag for four nights of sleep on s lousy mattress!
The pic on line is extremely deceptive. The entrance to the place is smaller than my toilet at home. Going up the stairs over thick dark blue carpet loaded with spots and who knows how many years of street dust and dirt gives the place a weighted feeling. The darkness continues. The reception desk lies past the hotel lounge and bar... won't find me in there....dark dark dark.
The receptionist is a lively young thing friendly, lovely and helpful. The luggage can be stored in the room behind the desk. THE CONDITION OF THIS PLACE, was to say the least, disappointing, dibilitating and depressive. Two couples spoken to on day two corobarated my observances.
Full of other luggage, the storage space behind reception had a desk strewn with paper and computer stuff, a fridge littered with dishes and cutlery and an appearance of years of collected disarray. The floor was a mess of stuff and upon all that
M&S Take-away
I covered the table with the first beach towel to give some semblance of cleanliness disorder the luggages had to be stored because check in was not until 11.00. On the wall hangs a sign ' Welcome to Hell' . This room should have been the first clue. So up the lift, down the hall on more carpet and into a room with tartan carpet, a step up to the bed area (hope I don't trip onn this when going to the toilet during the night), no chair in sight, a stand alone wardrobe that wiggled with each step and made noise, barred windows covered in purple flowing drapes and a desk with kettle cup and tea bags.
The lines in the brown and red tartan are no longer white and find it hard to be even caramel. The single bed has two decorative pillows on the newly recovered bed cover and bed pillows.(why contaminate the clean sheets with this frufru). The mattress is PURE foam. I sank into it so deeply it was difficult to turn.. ONLY one bed sheet covered this excuse for a bed mattress. Sweated the whole first night, Asked for a second HUGE towel to sleep upon.
The towels come in twos. A small one and the other
Art Nouveau
the door handle...the best thing about this hotel beach size. No face cloth. A towel rack trying hard to be 30cm is used for the BEACH and small towel. One bathmat was the same white as the other towels. I received extra towels on request altho one young thing had difficut]lty disinguishing between small towel and bathroom mat.
The bathroom looked... reasonable. BUT.... even the big flush button did not carry all down., the bathtub drain gurggled every time water ran from sink or toilet and to adjust to hot water was an aquired trick. Took till day three to get a reasonable temperature.
And the best is yet to come.
In the evening the base beat could be heard until the small hours... Newcastle is after all a party town. THe guest in the other room could be heard moving about. And at seven in the morning the wafting smell of the famous Full English Breakfast seeped thru all the cracks and spaces not covered by door or carpet. It was enough to put me of any kind of breakfast. And even that smelly deal was not included in the price... but was sold for an enormous amount of 15GBP.
The Manager....so nice... has been here 27 years. The owner does come to his establishment. They are either both blind, have no idea about cleanliness, or just do not care to present an immaculate image. Shame on Booking.com for putting this place on their list as a three star-good choice.Definitely does not deserve a 7.5 more like a 5.5. The place feels sticky, looks battered and seems forlorn
BUT
It is the cheapest place going, advertising itself at from 24.95GBP. I paid 47.25GBP/nt.... spare me the sight of 24.95GBP!!!. I Did try to find other accomodations. All were exorbitant and all were occupied ... Newcastle ....the party town... people come from everywhere... even from Canada.... admit to disappointment in choice of hotel ..... big big big mistake!
