Benny and the big red bus.
Glastonbury music festival has been going since 1970, the day after Jimmy Hendrix died. It started as a small music festival and over the years has grown into the biggest music festival in England, this year over 150,000 attended and we were two of them. We had a decent little crew going but nothing could have prepared us for the sheer size of the place and the fact that if we ever lost anyone, we weren’t gonna find them again.

We were so excited to be going and had all the camping gear packed and enough baby wipes to change half of China (owing to there being only 1 shower block, which we would never see). The weather in the UK is pretty unpredictable in June but Glasto has a reputation for being wet and muddy. The sensible thing would have been to bring gumboots but Baz insisted that the “power of positive thinking” would ensure the sun shone for us. Consequently we brought no gumboots. It just so happened that this year the little dairy farm-come-festival ground saw 2 months rainfall in 1 night. It rained pretty much continuously from about 2am on Thursday night to 2pm on Friday,

or something ridiculous like that. We certainly didn’t venture out of our tent until about 2pm on Friday. Most of the morning’s acts had been cancelled as a couple of tents had to be used as accommodation for all the people who’s camping area had been flooded. By complete luck, we had camped on top of a hill so we were pretty safe.

Once we got over the rain it was time to face the mud. Since all the gumboots had sold out we were reduced to wrapping bin bags around our feet and legs before stuffing them into our trainers and wading through knee deep mud to get around the site. The weird part was, it was seriously fun! Everyone at the festival was still in pretty good spirits and a helping hand was never far away if you slipped or fell or got stuck. Luckily for everyone, that was pretty much all the rain we got and Saturday and Sunday the sun came out and started to dry the place up. So much so we even managed to lie down on the grass to watch a few of the acts on Sunday avo.

The line up

was pretty damn good and we saw some great acts, but the best part about the festival was just walking around. Going from area to area there was just so much happening. Loads of “street” performers, people dressed up, people randomly acting out skits. Plus this was the first time that Silent Disco had been held in England. Basically you go in and everyone gets a pair of headphones. There are 2 DJ’s up on stage and you can tune in to both of them. So the DJ’s are pretty much trying to play each other off and the crowd switches between the DJ’s. The weirdest thing was when you took the headphones off to watch everyone dancing to silence and watch people dancing to 2 different beats.

One of the oddest moments was when this chick on stilts arrived, all bronzed up looking like a bug/alien. We all stood around watching her for a bit and then suddenly we looked around and saw that we were totally surrounded by them! Big, small, male, female, kids and midgets all dressed up the same way, snarling. Eep. But the freakiest thing was when were wandering in “Lost Vagueness”, we bumped

The flooding
into these guys in a tent and they did the matrix trick with the spoon, only they used a fork. They gave it to us to hold so we knew it was solid, then held it in two fingers, made it bend and then made it twist so that the head of the fork twisted off! Freeeeaky….

So who did we get to see…Coldplay, Fat Boy Slim, Goldie Looking Chain, Kaiser Chiefs, Basement Jaxx, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson and loads more that I can’t remember.

It was definitely the most fun we’ve ever had at a festival and we swore this wouldn’t be the last Galsto we went to.
