yesterday (Dec. 1) Julia and I headed out to Scarborough. Thus far, I have been reluctant to travel around Britain b/c everything over here is so expensive and its one of my main goals to get to as many countries as possible. However, I feel kind of bad for Julia b/c she's only here for the semester (which means she's really cramped for time to do everything), and the only person she has to travel with is me (this is bad b/c i'm really cheap). when she told me that we could get to and from scarborough for only £6.50, though, I relented.
In case you don't know, Scarborough is a coastal city in Yorkshire. It's pretty small, but I hear it draws a big crowd in the summer.
We had really fantastic weather all day, which is pretty miraculous since it rained in Yorkshire on both friday and Sunday. It would have been really miserable to walk in the rain, but fortunatley, it was almost painfully sunny.
we got into the city center around 10:30. By 11 we had visited the tourist information center and gotten our bearings, and headed out in the direction of the various
attractions. We got a little lost on the way to the art gallery, but that's okay b/c i didn't want to go there anyway and instead we found a really nice path up a hill with really great views of the beach. On the way we saw a lady trying to feed a really cute little bird, and I also almost got a squirrel to come up to me. Unfortunately, it was too smart and figured out there was nothing edible in my hands and went away.
After this peaceful walk we went to eat an early lunch. The book my brother got me for Christmas last year said that a place called "mother hubbard's" was a great place to get cheap and delicious fish and chips. Julia doesn't like fish at all, but she was good enough to suffer through some sub-par chicken nuggets while i feasted on my plate of greasy delight. This place is where I got the title for this entry. it really did smell like long john silver's, but the fare was much better. this is the first time I've had fish and chips since I've been over here, and I can't say that
that's a bad thing. I think I would die of a heart attack before I came home if I ate that stuff too often.
After lunch we walked through the town center for a few minutes, and we noticed some white particles falling from the sky. I figured it was ash or paper fragments or something like that, since it was in the upper 40's and bright and clear out, but julia insisted it was snowing and literally said "IT'S SNOW! DREAMS CAN COME TRUE, SARAH!". well, it was and it wasn't. in an effort to promote holiday cheer, there was a fake snow-blowing machine on one of the main streets. how cute.
next, we walked up a really big hill to get to the grave of anne bronte, the least important of the bronte sisters. it was covered in shrubbery and in a very pretty, green graveyard by a cute little church (St. Mary's). Green being a key word in that description. The grass over here is so much better than back home! In arkansas, we have about 15 days of green grass. either it's too cold or its too dry. over here, though, the grass is
a brilliant green all year round, and i love it.
after leaving anne we continued to walk up hill to the scarborough castle. I just tried to get dates for this castle from wikipedia, but i couldn't find any specifics. I think it was built sometime around 1300, though. it had extensive walls, but the main castle part (the keep) was missing a bunch of walls. It was nice to see, though. Just as I hadn't eaten fish and chips before the trip, this is also the first time I've seen a castle in England so that was a fun experience.
i rolled down a hill on the castle green. here is the video for that. julia is really excited as she holds the camera.
by the time we left the castle we were running out of daylight (it's dark here at 4), so we quickly scooted down to the beach. it was too cold to properly enjoy it, but it was nice to see all the boats and seagulls and strangely, video arcades down by the beach. we were both really tired, so we stopped and had ice cream (for me) and a coke
float (for julia) while resting our poor feet.
once it was dark there was nothing we really wanted to do but our train didn't leave till 5:45, so we meandered through marks and spencer and i bought a coke at a coffee shop so we could sit down for awhile.
that's about all. I would recommend Scarborough as a daytrip if you're in the Yorkshire area and hankering for a day at the beach without swimming.

This is beautiful
Good gravy, I wish I were there with you! Your pictures are, again, amazing. I'm glad Julia made you go! Also, there were two other Bronte sisters who died in their youth, so at least Anne wasn't a total loser. It would suck being kin to two other (better) writers. God, they were weird. BTW, I'm still totally obsessed with that Kate Bush song. And I see you're up to your old tricks--feeing wild life and all. Never change, Sarah J, never change! That little birdy was really cute.
