Saturday 07/04/12 Vigo,Spain
Vigo is known as "the Gateway to Atlantic" and is the largest and the most important
city in Galicia, Spain, the Old Town still retains four of the original squares – Plaza de Pedra, Plaza Almeida, Plaza Princesa and the largest of the four, Plaza Constitucion. All of these squares are full of character, as they are framed with the original buildings of the quarter. Whilst
ambling around we discovered the parish church of Santa Mari and popped in and immediately realised it was Easter Sunday as all the icons and statues were on platforms ready to be paraded through the town later in the day so we left as discreetly as possible.
As we're only here for the morning so there's little time to explore much further than the immediate town, which is a maze of small winding back streets most of the buildings have beautiful wrought iron balconies some still with the original glass work which was used to enclose the balcony, they're beautiful, if only the authorities did something to preserve them and make the owners look after them, it would make such a difference.
After meandering around the town we made the fairly
steep climb up to Parque do Castro from where we visited El Castro-Restos de la Fortaleza which are the remains of the fortress
overlooking the town. Originally this vantage point would have given panoramic views all across the town and more importantly 180O views out to sea, unfortunately now the trees have encroached and are so tall that much of the views are either blocked or only visible through
the branches. It was disappointing to see the amount of graffiti as we walked around the town and as we walked through the park with memorials, and statues all daubed with graffiti and slogans proclaiming this and that.
Sunday 08/04/12 At Sea
Most of last night and today has been spent packing and despite the fact that all my
medicines have now been used up and we've drunk the 6 ltrs of wine we brought with us there's still hardly any room to pack everything we brought with us plus the presents for the kids and family so it's a case of forget the limit of 3 cases and 1 piece of hand luggage each and just pray.
