We had a really early start today, as our plane to Dubai left Heathrow Airport at just gone 9am.
The Hotel Hoppa bus arrived on time and we were taken into Heathrow at just gone 6am.
We had heard lots of issues recently that people have apparently had with Emirates Airline so we made sure that none of our luggage exceeded their weight or size limits. No issues here, they did not even weigh the hand luggage which really surprised us. Although when we got to board the plane, there were many people with bigger bags than us, so maybe today they were not checking. We have never travelled with such a generous 30kgs stowed luggage allowance. Very lavish indeed.
When we got to the boarding gate the plane was there waiting for us. The gigantic A380 is a very different shape to the conventional plane, particularly because it has two floors all the way along the plane. It has an upper deck and a lower deck hence it has been called the double decker. Ever since they first introduced this plane we have really wanted to fly on it, so it is really great to be doing
this at last.
Again, we have heard many comments about bad service, bad food and bad seats on Emirates flights. Glad to say today we experienced none of these, and would definitely recommend Emirates for anyone doing this route. The travelling time to Dubai is around 6.5 hours.
We had a bank of three seats for the two of us that also had a window over the offside vast wing area. They were just where we wanted them. Although with hindsight, maybe next time maybe they should not be over the wing so we can see more on take-off and landing.
They gave out a menu of the lavish food on offer and it sounded good. When it arrived it tasted as good as it looked. They also offered free beverages including most alcohol.
The 6.5 hour flight was excellent and we arrived in Dubai roughly on time. It was dark, so no chance of seeing much of the town upon arrival.
We had booked a car to pick up at the airport, as there are no metros on Friday mornings, and we had a 12.00 booking for our first activity. We thought it would
be more convenient with a car. With hindsight, we should have stuck to taxies.
The road names in Dubai are not very clear at all. It did not help that the road map we printed was from terminal 2 and we were in terminal 3. After a few double backs and a U turn in the middle of the road, we found the hotel and the car park.
We have chosen the Delmon Hotel for our first four days here, and very impressed we were with it. The rooms are what we would describe as olde worlde with lots of wood. It was very comfortable and clean. All the staff were initially more than happy to help you with anything.
Across the road was a large local supermarket so we were able to stock up on water and a few drinks to get us started.
We took a short walk to the main road and found a vast array of different shops and local food outlets.
George has a passion for Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) that it is not available in Tenerife. KFC arrives in Santa Cruz, Tenerife in November. When we saw one just
around the corner from the hotel, we had to try it. But this would be the only time in Dubai. We were really surprised to find that it was full of locals. We were expecting it to be full of tourist and expats. The servers thought it was quite funny that we were in there, and again could not do enough to make our visit a very enjoyable one.
