sun bathing
we went out and hung out in the park one day when it was hot and sunny...this is one of the chairs you can pay 2 pounds for to sit in Well. I have not had a blog in a little while. I believe the last thing I talked about was the pub crawl I did for one of the RA's birthday's. So, the question is...what have I done since then. Well, it was my roommates 21st birthday in London, went to a play called SPAMALOT (based on the Monty Python and the Holy Grail), ate some Indian food, and went to Ireland.
As many of you may know, 21 is a special year for the people in America. I dont think I need to go into detail about any birthday celebration that might take place in America because I think that everyone can imagine. However, the 21st birthday is not celebrated in the United Kingdom like it is in the United States. It did turn out to be an eventful night though. My friend/roommate's boyfriend was in town which was nice because he brought a little piece of home. But on the night of Aimee's 21st birthday, we went to a comedy show called the Comedy Store. It's a really well-known comedy place in London. It was one of the funniest things that I have ever been to. I have
ice cream
ice cream in the park never been to a live comedy store before so I have nothing to compare it to besides Ellen. But it was really funny. They made fun of Americans a lot, which is obviously funny, and they made fun of a couple of my friends during the show. One of the guys that works there is actually on television a lot for his comedy. After the comedy store we headed to a bar known as "The Sports Cafe." It is supposed to show American sports on the television but it is best known for the pound 50 drinks they have a on Tuesday nights. When we got to the sports bar, we were in great shock to find out that you had to have an id to get into the bar in order for it to be free cover. So, the birthday girl and myself had to pay a 5 pound cover to get into the bar. We did end up having a really good time though.
One of the days was really sunny and hotter than normal, so Aimee and I decided to go to Hyde Park and sit next to the pond and lay out to attempt to
darken our pale bodies. You can always tell the Americans because they are the ones wearing their bathing suites in the park. There are some chairs that you can sit in if you want to, but they charge you 2 pounds for a 4 hour time slot, and to be quite honest, i didnt need to sit in the chairs that bad. We ate some ice cream and I experimented with my photography ability to see what kind of pictures I could take. I actually got sunburned.
The next "event" that I participated in was the play called SPAMALOT. It is a musical to the movie called "The Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Besides my talent brothers plays, this the only "real" play that I have ever been to. There were a few jokes that I think in order to comprehend you have to be English, but other than those few minor mix ups, I thought it was a good play. There was a rumor amongst the theater people here in this program that that SPAMALOT play was actually better in the US than in UK, but I didnt know the difference.
During the day on Friday,
swans
you can get really close to the swans in the park Aimee, our friend Melissa, and I all went to explore some more of London. Melissa was only a 3 weeker, or Freshman as some of us are now calling it (each 3 weeks you go up an age..), so she wanted to visit some things she had not seen yet. That being said, we were trying to find this "open market" that was supposed to have a bunch of market-like things in it. We never actually found the this "market" but we did get to ride on a different tube line than we had before, and we got out pub crawl t-shirts. After that, we headed off to St. Paul's Cathedral. St. Paul's Cathedral has the 2nd largest dome in the world. It was a lot like Westminster Abbey, but had a lot less dead people in it. We actually had the chance to walk up a million stairs to the dome area and then even up higher to see an outlook of the city. It is 257 steps to the "Whispering Tower", 376 steps up to the "Stone Gallery" which is the first outside view you get, and then 528 steps to the "Golden Gallery." The Golden Gallery is
the highest that you can go and it overlooks so much of the city. The day that we went was a little bit cloudy, but in the case of more sunshine, I may have been able to see even further. St. Paul's was definitely one of the most beautiful places that I have seen. I wasn't able to take many pictures because it is not allowed but I did try and steal a few shots when no one was looking.
On Friday night, Aimee's dad came into London for a visit (he had been in the England doing some work near by and was leaving the next day) and we all had dinner together. We decided that the best food in England to eat was the Indian food. Aimee picked out the place to eat and decided to meet her dad in Piccadilly Circus at 9 at night. At about 815 or so, Aimee got a text from her dad saying he was going to be a little bit late and not get there until 945. We figured we had some time to just relax and hang out with some of our friends. At about 840, Aimee got another
grass
i was trying to be artistic text from her dad saying he was at the "meeting spot." Automatically, we freak out and start running to the tube station because it takes about 15-20 min to get to Piccadilly. Her dad had accidentally put a 9 instead of an 8. Anyway, I had never had Indian food so I figured I could give it a try and see how it went. It was delicious. We had some lamb and chicken curry and some other thing I cant remember. But it was the first time that I ever had lamb, and the good news is, it was awesome. For some strange reason, anytime I think of curry, I think of something like couscous which is obviously not what it is at all because curry is a spice. Please forgive me, I am a blond. We drank some Indian beer called "Cobra" as well.
I was going to tell you about Ireland in this blog but I forgot how much stuff I had done before Ireland. And Ireland deserves a blog dedicated completely to itself.
