On my last entry, I was over the maximum number of characters and I didnt get to tell ya'll about Salisbury Cathedral I went to.
After the trip to Stonehenge, our group went to Salisbury to see the Salisbury Cathedral. When we arrived there, our tour guy was telling us about the location and places that we could get a bite to eat after we toured the Cathedral and one of the guys in our group asked if there was anywhere serving Salisbury steak. Our tour guy looked puzzled and asked what exactly Salisbury steak was and we had to explain that it was an American steak. Apparently the steak did not come from Salisbury just like Belgium Waffles dont come from Belgium (or so someone told me). Anyway, we took a tour of the Cathedral and it was really beautiful. It is actually made out of chalk and was having some work done to restore it because chalk was actually coming off of the church. Our tour guide said the Cathedral is known as Victorian Goth because of specific details on and in the Cathedral. The Cathedral has a spire that is 404 feet high, the second highest tower
in the world and highest in Britain. We werent able to go up there, but it would have been amazing to see. Like most of the churches in England, there are a lot of people buried beneath it. It also has the finest of only four surviving original Magna Carta, and Europe's oldest working clock (from 1386).
The town of Salisbury reminded me of Cambridge. I was able to walk on the streets with only a few cars and there was a flea market in the town. I sat with some friends as they ate lunch at a local pub (I brought myself a sandwich that I made from the cafeteria at our school) and we just sat and talked. I did notice that the bacon here is actually different then the bacon that we have in America; it's more like ham. Anyway, after lunch we cruised through the town and looked at some shops and found a candy place that had fudge; 75 pence for 100 grams. We decided to all pitch in and try some of the candy. I wish I wouldn't have done that. The fudge was hard and not very tasty. After we looked around
first pub
map and the first beer at the first pub for awhile, we just hung out in the grass before we had to be on the bus. The weather was perfect and it reminded me of back home. We had to make sure we were on the bus on time because at Stonehenge we were late being on the bus. I was trying to take some "jumping" pictures of my friends in front of the stones but there was a high degree of difficulty involved in taking the pictures because my friends get off the ground less than I do...so imagine that. Needless to say, it took a long time to take those pictures and we were late to the bus. But Salisbury was a neat town and I enjoyed the town very much.
On a different note, the other day was one of the RA's birthday in our dorm and he was turning 22. His girlfriend has actually moved here for the summer to stay with him and she arranged for us to do a pub crawl with him for this birthday. For those of you that dont know what a pub crawl, it is exactly what it sounds like: you crawl to a pub. Basically, you start
at one bar and get a drink, shot, or something to eat and then you walk to the next bar on the map and do it again. You repeat this 5 times and at the end of the "trial" you get a free t-shirt. I use the word "free" liberally here because you have to buy 5 drinks before you can get the t-shirt. So, it's not really free. There were about 60 people that came out for this birthday celebration, and pubs really aren't that big. So instead of hanging with the whole group, a few of us branched off and decided to do our own pub crawl from the same map. Pubs are only open until 11 and we didnt realize how late it was until we heard the last call bell at 1045 and we still at TWO bars to go to. We drank our drinks and ran to the next bar and tried to get something really fast and then ran to the next bar, which wasn't remotely close to the last bar. Picture this: 8 American boys and girls trying to find their way to different pubs, pulling out their ridiculous maps in an attempt
to get a "free" t-shirt. What Americans will do for free stuff! I know you are all on the edge of your seat wondering if we made it to the last bar. The answer to that question is no. We got to the "White Lion" at 11:05 and the bartender would not serve us anything. Now, we just RAN from one bar to the next to get our free t-shirt and it didnt even happen. Can you imagine how angry some of the people were? It was actually kind of amusing and an awesome experience. We will be able to get the free t-shirt because you can go to the bars on whatever days you want; you dont have to do them all in one night.
Well, that is all I have for right now. I'll keep blogging when I have more stuff to tell you about!
