The empty street
The police station is the large orangish building on the left, Supermarket is on the right (can't really see it), and the clinic is further to the left. Normally, this street is bumper to bumper, but not today. The bad news is that on the opposite side of the police station from where I work, there was a stabbing incident. Thankfully, this happened last night about 11pm (from what I can gather) and I was at home safe in my warm, cozy bed.
A bit of background: For my Sure Start job which isn't quite off the ground at this point, I am going to the neighborhood clinic that is just across the car park from the Sure Start building. That's where I have access to a computer and a place to see clients for assessments. The police station is across a small alleyway to the west of the clinic and the main street through the part of town where I work is just to the west of the police station. Across that street, there's a grocery.
And the body was found on the street in front of the grocery.
Here's the site for the
BBC News article.
It's just so weird that this has happened so close to where I work. I knew I wasn't working in the best part of town, but I just have to question the motive of the person who decided to commit this crime in the street OUTSIDE the big, huge POLICE STATION!!! The street that it happened on was so quiet today that being at work was almost eerie. Normally, I can't hardly cross the street because of all the cars and today, I could have danced a jig in the street (granted, I don't dance so this of course wouldn't have actually occured--I can feel the beat, just don't make me move to it!). The silence of the area was so distracting that I almost couldn't work.
Today I did four more assessments. I'm steadily working my way through a waiting list that kids have been on since March. Over the past three weeks, I've made it up to the kids who were referred in August. Now if only I could get all the reports typed and official....
Work's going pretty well even though I still haven't been given a lot of direction as to the responsibilities and duties of my job. I did have a meeting with my manager and she's going to hire someone for the empty position with my EYSI job so that I've got some help going to the groups. I'll be that person's supervisor and since I'll then be in a supervisory position, I'll get a bit of a pay raise. Very exciting for me!
I also got the official letter today saying that I have received my Health Professions Council (HPC) registration. It took six months to the day for me to receive the letter. I can't believe it's actually come through. Now I have to wait on the certificate to come and then I can send a copy to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) along with some more pounds and I'll be all squared away.
And now on to other happy things I've been doing. Tonight I went to Cineworld and saw a movie called Nanny McPhee. It was really cute. Stars Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, and the kid from Love Actually. I'd highly recommend it to those of you with kids and even some of you without kids. Very colorful and funny. I went with the three women I work with at EYSI and one of their daughters. We had a good time and it was nice to be out with people I work with but not actually have to talk about work.
Similarly, I went to Islington with four of the SLTs with whom I work on Tuesday night. Ended up just chilling and chatting. Two of the girls are American and two are British. The two British girls were giving us all sorts of details of their upcoming travels. Ruth is heading to New Zealand for the month of November and Gemma is going on a 29K mile round-the-world trip for five months throughout southeastern Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, South America, and the US. We had a good time and I managed not to miss my train to come back to my flat. There were engineering works overnight on the line I use and that meant that all the late trains were cancelled. I escaped the night bus again....
Ok, well, I must sit and watch House which I must confess is one of my favorite "new" programs. I have five stations: BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Four, and Five. They're good, but I miss my lineup of sitcom repeats between the hours of 5p and 8p every night. I've started to watch the news if that's any indication. I'm looking into getting a Freeview box that would let me get about 30 stations, but I need to check with my flatmate about whether it's feasible or not to do.
Oh, on the flatmate note. She had gone to Cuba for two weeks and was supposed to return on Monday. But did she? You're right. You picked up on the "supposed" in that last sentence. So smart you are. She actually didn't return until late Tuesday afternoon since she was in Cuba at the same time Wilma was. She ended up having about a 24 hour delay getting her flight out. The cancelled all the incoming flights and therefore effectively cancelled any outgoing flights since there weren't any airplanes.
Now that I've written just about the most disjointed (and most paragraphized...sorry, made that one up, but can't think what the proper word should be) entry ever, I must sign off. Talk to you soon, Mary
