April 3 – The Eagle has Landed .....
After a good night’s sleep, we ate breakfast at our B&B, the Penrose Inn. Wow! These British breakfasts are huge! To start with; two eggs, two pieces of large bacon, one large sausage link, pork & beans, roasted tomato, and finally roasted mushrooms. I forgot... plenty of toast.
Kirsten found us a bike rental in Bodmin and by 9:30 am we’re heading to Bodmin. We arrived around 10 am and the bike rental had just opened. We walked up and asked if he had any eBikes for rent. He said yes but only one, the other one was not available due to it needing repair. So, we rented one eBike and one regular bike, after trying to convince the guy running the shop that It didn’t matter if the fender was missing one screw. These Brits can be very annal!
Off we went to the Camel Trail. The Camel Trail was converted from an old railway that was used between Bodmin and Padstow, running for 12 miles. The trail runs along the Camel River, thus the name the Camel Trail.
After an hour of riding, we came into the
town of Wadebridge, which is where we stopped and had a cup of coffee. After 30 minutes or so we were back on our bikes and on our way. Kirsten made us lunch, always the Girl Scout; not knowing what we would find along the bike trail. Hello! Tourist area...
We arrived in Padstow at low tide. Yes, major cute and full of people, shops and yes PUBS! It is the Easter Break for all of Britain....people everywhere. We parked the bikes and took our lunch looking for a pub. Yes, we were ready for a beer or two maybe three. After lunch, Kirsten wanted to walk through Padstow, no problem I’ll be right her having another beer. Take your time Love, that’s British for have a good time dear.
We rode the 12 miles back to Bodmin, not as easy as going to Padstow. The trail has a low and slow grade uphill for the last 3-4miles. Kirsten was on the eBike, towing me for the last mile. It wasn’t pretty.
Finally, we made it back to our B&B cleaned up a bit and headed to Charlestown Beach for dinner. This is another cute village on
the Chanel, Yea, that’s how the Brits say it, you know we’re adapting to the area, Aye.
We parked close to the bay and walked the to the restaurant. The wind was blowing so hard my hat flew off and I had to chase it down the road. We decided to have Fish and Chips for dinner at The Pier House. We sat at the bar for dinner, and why not a table you ask....
We didn’t have reservations. The bartender told us all about the The Pier House and why it was famous because of the movie “The Eagle has Landed” staring Donald Sutherland. He was thrown through the front window of the restaurant. I’ve seen the movie and plan on watching again.
We drove home navigating the NARROW roads and once we arrived, we were both ready for bed.
What a day!
Quick note the movie The Eagle has Landed was filmed in Charlestown Beach, it’s a WWII classic.
