Greetings from Wengen – which I have to say is now SUNNY…yay – but when I started the blog it was SNOWING… boo!!!
How is everyone doing…? All ok I hope...?
My ‘hits’ weren’t great for the last blog, despite me begging for you to pass it around your friends and family… better luck this time though and Steven is trying to drag me into the computer age big-time by opening a twitter account so another form of advertising can’t be a bad thing… According to him I need to pimp my profile… understanding the workings of and the point of Twitter should possibly be a consideration too…?
Anyway I hope you enjoy this instalment of my Swissyland adventures…
I know it’s very British to talk about the weather but I have to tell you that considering this time of year is generally classed as summer I just want to know why we are still in winter… Seriously, someone needs to inform the powers that be that it is actually possible to have too much of a good thing… namely SNOW – loads of it… it keeps coming and then going, lulling us into spring mode then
wham! It’s back… it has its advantages though. Allowing normally relatively sensible reps to become complete idiots and partake in impromptu snowball fights… the one at First up in Grindelwald on the reps day out was particularly good fun! And that was before any alcohol was consumed… Sadly due to adverse weather conditions we didn’t do the flyer – which is a zip-wire type harness thing that you sit in and whizz down the mountain, but we have our vouchers so, another time – looking forward to that, I is really good fun!
You may recall I mentioned the World Ice Hockey finals in my last blog… The Swiss had beaten the Americans and were taking on Sweden in the final… We had a good night… went to a bar, ate good food, had a few drinks, had good company and watched Sweden whoop the Swiss 5-1! Sweden came 1
st, Switzerland 2
nd and USA 3
rd – I think the Fins came 4
th. Note for the Swiss team… keep telling yourselves it’s not about winning it’s about taking part so better luck next year Switzerland!
Good news!! Big congratulations to Helen and Peter (and Lilly-Sophia) – and welcome to
the world the 2
nd of the May babies, Nicolas James. He arrived safely on 23
rd May and he is soooooo cute, I had my first snuggle with him the other day and can’t wait to see him again soon.
Wengen is springing into life again after the shutdown between winter and summer (even though it still feels like winter…) there’s lots of holidaymakers about the place who I understand are here for their ‘summer’ holidays, most are making the most of it but some of the walkers and hikers are a little disappointed as many of the walks to see the beautiful alpine flowers are still covered in deep snow. Rocks Bar has re-opened so me and the other Wengen reps will be visiting on the odd occasion – someone needs to research the quality of beer and wine available to visitors…
My friend, Eirwen, and I had a little day trip to Gstaad… it rained the whole time, the shops were mostly closed so we bought a postcard in the only gift shop that was open and ate apple strudel with vanilla sauce, then hopped on a train back to Interlaken… I will go back to Gstaad
for another visit, it’s not a huge place but it has some famous connections and I bet on a nice day is lovely to wander around, perfect also for a bit of people watching. Sometime later in the summer it’s also hosting a polo championship so I might have a little visit while that’s on.
I stayed down in Zermatt with my buddy Hazel last week – she’s back after her break in the UK and guess what happened while I was in Zermatt… It SNOWED!! I did manage to get a couple of lovely sunset shots of the Matterhorn though – did you know that the Matterhorn is the most photographed mountain in the world – apparently…
Zermatt, for those of you who don’t know, is a very popular resort in both summer and winter, it sits right at the end of a valley with passage to la bella Italia blocked by the Matterhorn. There are numerous bars and restaurants which makes it a lively town and perfect for all ages, in the summer they have a daily goat parade up the main street… it’s supposedly a car free resort, like Wengen, but the growing numbers of electric put-put vehicles can make it seem surprisingly busy and considerably un-car free. The Matterhorn museum is also worth a little visit if you’re ever in Zermatt and for the skiers amongst you it’s one of the only places to offer year round skiing, in fact the Swiss Ski Team train there during summer months – not that I would know who any of them were even if they poked me with a ski pole and introduced themselves… I’m not a ski person…
Finally, I just need to tell you about my birthday celebrations… My Birthday was on a Sunday so on the Saturday evening the Wengen reps hit Rocks Bar for ‘a glass of wine’… midway through the evening it was very clear that the ‘one’ was going to be several so the evening was renamed a practice run for my actual Birthday!!! My lasting recollection of that evening will be us all singing along to ‘Happy Birthday to you’ by Stevie Wonder – which Danny kindly played for me on the stroke of midnight… When it came to the actual big day a couple of the Interlaken reps ventured up the mountain and there was a little more celebrating in Rocks, then came the climax of my Birthday weekend , such as it had turned into by this stage, the James Bond (all you can eat – with Prosecco) Buffett Breakfast up the Schilthorn in the revolving restaurant! Fantastic and a very big thank you to everyone who made it… Steven, Ali, Laura, Emily, Euan, Nik, Lorraine, Arwyn & Laura – thanks also to Kat and her dad for ‘popping’ up with my pressie –you would not think it possible for someone to get that excited about a shower cap! I proudly wore my shower cap during breakfast and back down the mountain in the cable car… it gave the plentiful Japanese tourists something to wonder about… and looked extremely fetching when paired with my sunglasses!
Apologies everyone for another really long blog – maybe I should attempt to do them more frequently or maybe just do less in between…
So that’s it until next time and until next time – play nicely and happy travelling
Love Tallulah x
