We considered that a continuation from yesterday was in order for today since the weather was good, so we got the train to Grindelwald and then the Post Bus to Grosse Scheidegg where we had finished yesterday. We liked the look of walking down to Schwartzwaldalp from the far side of the valley rather than down the middle where we usually go. First, we headed across the saddle then off down to an Alp below the mountains - no people of course. The views to the Wetterhorn and beyond were magnificent as we were at waterfall height and looking directly to the glaciers. The first part of the hike was great until we decided to take a track down rather than a 45 minute longer route. It was down over grass, rocky rough paths, bog and through forest but forever down. By the time we actually got to the river at the bottom and at Schwartzwaldalp our feet and legs had had enough. We now linked up to the usual route that the bus, locals and cyclists used. There were some incredibly knackered looking cyclists coming up from Meirengen which is hardly surprising as this valley has two really steep sections.
One coming up from Meirengen to the plateau where the Reichenbach Falls are and then the rise up to the saddle at Grosse Scheidegg.
At Rosenlaui, the next bus was an hour away so we kept on down the valley to meet with the next bus before the Falls. We only just made it as it would have been another hour and a half walking otherwise. The bus trip freaked me out. There were tight U bends on a narrow road and long drops to below. The bus drivers are very skilled on these roads and traffic has to give way to them. We saw more than one having to back up to let the bus through. I was very happy indeed that the bus took us right to the railway station. Usually we walk down all the way for 15kms. I certainly wasn't up to that after all the long hikes we've been doing. There's only so much that the body can stand day after day, so a quiet day is in order for tomorrow. However, mission accomplished. This is the one hike that we always do as it has everything that we enjoy - challenge, pastoral and
The glacier and falls off the Wetterhorn
Taken from a small Alp across the valley scenic with soaring mountains, waterfalls and glaciers.
I should mention the strange behaviour of some tourists on the train. One woman was done up to the nines in fashionable clothes and high heels, I have no idea what she was going to do in Grindelwald dressed like that. A couple across from us spent the whole time on their phones and didn't even see the amazing scenery. Why bother to come, one would wonder.
We've heard that the weather is supposed to turn cold and changeable tomorrow so we think we'll head through the mountains where the weather should be better.
