From the gondola
Looking out over pasture and forest towards the glacier and mountains on the opposite side of the valley Of course, since Grindelwald has been our old stomping ground for years, we should at least pay a visit or two. The problem is, it's changed a lot over the years and is now a tourism mecca, meaning that it is teeming with tourists to visit the many popular places. It is a stunning place but it was so much nicer before it became overrun. The good thing is, it is not difficult to quickly get out of the busy places and still not miss out on the beauty.
On arriving in Grindelwald, the train spewed out a myriad of black heads of predominantly Asians, so it is still popular with them but there weren't the large numbers of Indians and Arabs as seen at other times. The more popular the place becomes, the more they have to cater for them so the favourite old railway will be replaced with cable cars, the Mannlichenbahn made larger, a new station built, a huge car parking building built, and the station at Kleine Scheidegg moved. How awful! - Time not to return anymore methinks. Such a pity as it is a stunningly beautiful place.
We walked through the town and got
a gondola up to First which is always a favourite with views straight across to the high alps, the remaining glaciers and the Wetterhorn and Eiger. It glides up over pastures, the town outskirts, over forests, lakes and streams until arriving above 2000m. From here we headed off in the opposite direction to the hoards. Our hike took us on the mountain path across to Grosse Scheidegg where we soaked up the views in and out of cloud. We were high enough up on this path to be at cloud height so sometimes it was very cold and at others quite sunny and warm. We thought we'd get back to Grosse Scheidegg in time to get the bus so we moved at full speed on the last kilometer and got there - just as the bus left!!! All that speed and effort for nothing. Never mind, we sat at the foot of the Wetterhorn mountain and admired the views down the valley to Meirengen which is another favourite place of ours to hike. Maybe we'll return tomorrow and do a hike from here to the far side of the area where we haven't been before.
Back in Grindelwald, we
The Marmot Trail
This trail is made for families to learn all about marmots, those cute furry animals. This is a wooden model but all around mounds of rocks have been placed to encourage marmots to build their houses and tunnels got dropped off the bus at the far end of Terrasenweg and walked along checking out any changes since our last visit. We stopped at Mrs Jossi's old place for a drink. We used to get our daily bread from her but she has since died and her house has been replaced with a huge house and restaurant. It's very nice and looks directly at the glacier across the valley. Further along the street we checked out Uf dr Ofni where we always stayed. It has been rebuilt to a big beautiful house and no longer looks anything like it used to. Time has moved on and so have the people.
Back to the town we went down the old path until we reached the station for the train back to Interlaken. So ends another superb day of hiking in the mountains. The legs are objecting but they'll just have to get used to it.
