impressive
overlooking wald, swtizerland Travelling with your parents can be hard work! haha a bag of malteasers before lunch will explain the situation! We took a train from paris to zurich, first class, yep I could get used to this style of travel; one of the bonuses of travelling with parents! Within 4 hours of leaving Paris we had arrived in the heart of the city although we didn't stay long for we were off to Dottingen to trace some family roots;apparently this area of Switzerland is where Dad's great grandfather was born. The day brought terrible weather but luckily after arriving in a very small village we found some accomodation in the local pub. After enjoying a nice beer and meal courtesy of some lovely locals I enjoyed my night alone in my private room with german tv and a couch and had an especially good nights sleep. We woke, ate at the bakery, looked around the town (everything was shut!!) and ventured back to zurich for the night. Not all that much to see, considering it was a Saturday in a small village but nice to get the feel of the place, rain and all, just the same.
We ventured back into the
big city shortly after 5 booked a hotel room and parted ways, lucky me, I was able to meet up with Simon, who I met in Costa Rica in his home city of Zurich. Some light walking around the lovely city, walking past the gorgeous lake and river, old buildings and enticing pubs/cafe's we enjoyed a catch up chat over a nice beer. Thanks Simon, I'll be back for sure.
So as I do, more often than not, I thought, about many things, including visiting my friend Juls in Germany, was it possible? Anything is possible in Europe right?! and considering I was in Europe I thought I'd d some research in which I found out that it was only going to take me 2 hours from Zurich to Freiburg, Germany! sweet. Freiburg has "Cute boys and Macca's" according to Juls so it didn't take much to convince me to go. Sunday evening after spending the morning at Reto's farm in Wald, a 40minute train ride from town, I was on a train to Germany.
I should mention before I go on, how happy dad was to see Reto and well to see his farm! He was like a four
year old at Christmas, couldn't wipe the smile off his face. THe farm was a polar opposite to ours, a much smaller property that ran cows, pigs and gew grass for silege. it rained down in bucket loads but the views were simply breathtaking, rolling hills covered in lush green grass, pretty flowers, small farms in between hills and in the distance? yep the snow covered Swiss Alps, ahhh I don't think it would be all that hard to get out of bed and go to work in this kind of environment. Thanks Reto for taking us to a resturaunt perked high up on a hill where we were able to see for miles, and for the amazing swiss meal; I c an't remember the name but it might as well be called 'heart attack on a plate' as it can't be good for you...hash browns, fried egg and a mountain of fried bacon, delicious but evil.
After a quick nap, I found myself in the train station again looking for my train, a huge locomotive reaedy to take me across the border. I was a wee little bit excited I must admit. By 8pm I had arrived and by
11pm I had reunited with the lovely Juls, had a tour around her beautiful home town, met her friends, indulged in another very different, local meal for dinner, met her awesome friend Isabel and downed about two litres of beer. Oh how great it was to be talking to someone my own age again....if only I hadn't have drank as much as I talked I probably wouldn't have ended up with the headache I did the following day! But all in the name of a reunion.
I was so happy to see my German girl again and meet her friends and see her town; oh Frieburg. I enjoyed wonderful food, in such great company, experienced a typical Freiburg eveningspent drinking too many big beers!! saw the town by day and night riding bicycles, and experienced the most decent hangover in quite some time. A pub crawl, popping beers, crazy self obsessed german girls taking surveys for own research and pompous american/french wanna be men....a trip to the church, a climb up a hill, some breakfast, many sighs, an arse, sunny roof tops and a wee parachute man called daniel, I may have only been in the city for 36 hours
but it was a wonderful 36. Juls I will be back to Frieburg if not to visit you definitely to enjoy another splendid breakfast and down a few more beers!
I arrived back in Zurich about 10pm with a sore head and a husky voice, its hard work being a tourist! So hard that by 8am the following morning I was off back to London, this time by means of aeroplane this time!
After only a few hours in London I had been in contact with Pip and we were off to Maccas! Ha so much to catch up on after two weeks apart, we spent about 2 hours together yapping away about our impending adult decision making.
I dropped some more un necessary clothing off at Jess' before taking myself over to Greg and Tizza's place to have a look around; very nice pad you have there guys! But as usual, there were places to be and people to see. So here I am, it's Monday morning and I am indeed sitting in my first class seat, laptop in hand making my way through the green hills in Scotland....ahhh!
