Farms and forest of the Emmental Valley
After a most enjoyable but short visit to see friends, it was time to return to Grindelwald. Even though it was almost 2 years since we were in St Gallen it was still quite fresh in our memories. Bruno and Gertrud have been great hosts as well as friends and maybe we can entice them to New Zealand.

You cannot compare this area in the north with the Berner Oberland because they are quite different. The Apenzeller area does have mountains but it has mainly lower and rolling countryside to the north. We discussed a different way to return to the south and chose to travel to Lucern and then along the Emmental Valley through the center of Switzerland via Wolhosen, Langnau, Konofigen and Thun. We had a hour to wait in Lucern so we took a short walk on the lake shore where there were vast numbers of people enjoying the shore by sitting, walking, eating and boating. The Emmental valley is somewhat different than other areas we've been. It is quieter. It is not touristy. It is very pretty with old style farmhouses and larger farms. There is more forest than I've seen in other areas and it

is a little steeper than in the north. It added an hour to our journey with several train changes, but other than Lucern, we had little time to wait during changes.

We arrived back to a glorious day in the mountains. There was hardly a cloud to be seen and it looks like this weather will continue for some days.
