Tourists in Gothenburg today. Looked at hop on hop off bus and maybe just get a metro ticket for the teams, buses and ferries. Neither of these happened.
Then saw a hop on boat doing the Harbour out the front of the hotel. Maybe that might work.
Got a call from Pippa so we chatted with her and Charlie. Pippa is missing us. Hadn’t been to Eastland for a while. Nice to know we are good for some things. Haha.
Had a quick chat with Stephanie then hit the streets. Walked around to a few of the highlighted spots in the Gothenburg book we had. Worked well until the rain came. Sheltered under cover at one of the museums that looked back down the main avenue in Gothenburg. Very scenic and dry.
Rain eased enough to find a place for coffee. Rained more while we were there but stopped again so allowed us to walk some more to the other side of town. Looking for a shopping street and a fort.
On the way saw a huge flight of stairs which were also in the book. Found an alternative way up, less stairs and easier on
the calves. At the top we were meant to see over the roof tops of town. No way, trees had grown since the book was written.
Need to find a way to the fort. Google maps to the rescue. Wandered off down local streets. Schools everywhere in this neighborhood with kids being picked up and cars and bikes all over the place.
Eventually found our fort. Skansen Kronen is its name. And up the hill is its game. Zig zag walking path - bitumanised but bloody steep. Finally puffed our way to the summit. Great views over town and a pretty bloody nice fort. The Kronen part of the name relates to the gilded crown at the top of the spire. Built to protect Gothenburg from the invading Danes. Never happened but boy, were they ready for them. 6 cannons on the ramparts ready to blow any invaders to smithereens.
As we started down there happened to be a bar in the forecourt. Bugger. Ok, Aperol Spritz for Chris and a nice cold beer for me. Sat at a bench and enjoyed the views of the city.
Down lots of stairs and into the shopping street
we had also been looking for. Good management.
Did that street but not much to write home about. One thing this street is famous for is its cinnamon buns. Found them but they were the size of a dinner plate. Way too big to eat.
We then headed back towards the hotel. As we walked there were quite a few restaurants that looked ok for dinner. Then we passed an Italian place that already had people queuing at the door (just after 6pm). Decision made. Back here for dinner after freshening up.
Rang to see if we could book a table. Sorry but all bookings done but if only 2 you can usually get a walk up table. Sure enough, walk up and straight onto a table.
Service was good and food also very good. Our waiter noticed us as Aussies. Said he had worked in Enzed for a while and had visited Australia before he had to return to Italy to get his passport fixed. Turns out he is Argentinian. Work that out….
Bill paid and back to the hotel before we pack the car again and head down south tomorrow.
