JonKoping is about halfway between Kristianstad and Stockholm so makes a good place to stay on our trip north. It is perhaps best known in many countries as the birthplace of Agnetha from Abba, but we’re hoping it also has something interesting enough for a 2 night stay.
Southern Sweden is home to most of the elk in the county and we find an “Alg” park not too far away. This park also has Red and Fallow deer but the standout sight are the Elks (or Moose). There are 4 male elks with huge antlers, 3 calves all born this year and 5 females. The elks have names and are tame enough to come close to the safari wagons for feeding.
Eskjo is a nearby town with pretty old wooden houses, mainly painted red, which surprisingly are quite unusual in Swedish towns as many were knocked down after WW2, though we notice there are many still standing in the county. In the area we find Skurugatas gastbok a small national reserve with a tricky short hike along a rocky gorge and a good viewpoint. On the drive back we stop off at the highest waterfall in southern Sweden which
we almost miss as I was expecting something a little more dramatic.
About 25km west of Jonkoping at Habo there is a large wooden church, famous in Sweden as it has featured on postage stamps. JonKoping as it stands on the 2nd largest lake in Sweden has a beach culture and the main town beach is near to where we are staying. The other main sights in the town are the Match museum (Jonkoping invented the safety match) and a museum to the Husqvarna company that was founded here - neither of these we visit - maybe next time!
