By taxi and train we got into Madrid fairly early and managed to fit in many of the main sights in the day.

Earlier in this trip we visited Guernica which was destroyed by bombing in the Spanish Civil War. Picasso produced a large and very famous painting depicting the anguish caused by the event. It is displayed at the Centro de Arte Reina and as we particularly wanted to see it this was our first stop. Viewing it was a very emotive experience.

The Museo del Prado is one of the leading art galleries in the world. Using the helpful floor plan provided by the gallery and with some careful cross referencing between pictures and their location we managed to see about 50 masterpieces by well known painters. Probably not the way art aficionados would manage their visit but we enjoyed it.

This large dose of art took most of the day but in the evening sunlight we managed to visit several other well known locations before finding a back street restaurant for supper.

We got back to the van at about 10.
