Top of the world? Jueves 5 febrero 2009-- Although, I only had 2 hours of class today, it was rough. My normal teacher was sick (the day before she was physically shaking in class), so we all had to go to the level above us. It was hard because they were about a day ahead of us in terms of material, so we were totally lost. Also, since the class is small, only 13 even with the two classes combined, you really can’t hide if you don’t know something, so it was a lot of work. But I survived it. On my way home, I stopped at the train station (it's about 5 mins from mi casa) and bought round trip tickets to Barcelona for Feb. 20 - Feb. 22. I’m really excited for this trip because it will be my first trip out of Alicante and there will be about 15 other CIEE students also going. Also, an old roommate of mine who is studying abroad in Galway, Ireland and another friend from Madrid, Spain are also going to meet me in Barcelona for the weekend. I decided to take the train instead of a plane because this way I don’t have to worry
Which way is home again?
CIEE friends at the summit about getting out to the airport since the train station is so close and I’ve never taken a train. Additionally, although it’s a 4.5 hour ride, it is all along the coast, so it should be enjoyable. I was able to take a 3 hour nap followed by doing homework and then hung out with friends downtown.
Viernes 6 febrero 2009- My professor was still sick, but class was a lot easier today after studying last night. When I got home, I tried to start a research paper for my history class that is due Monday, but I had a lot of difficulty accessing Marquette’s online resources, so that took a while to figure out. After lunch, I met some friends downtown for free mujitos. The weather is kind of gloomy and windy, which is unusual for Alicante, but my host familia has been making a lot of soup and warm dishes for meals. I didn’t go out tonight with friends because I have a big hike in the morning, so I went on facebook/skype and some homework before getting to bed early at 12.

No nescription necessary walk to the meeting spot for the hike. However, I hit the off button instead of the snooze button, so I woke up to a call at 7:20am. Since I didn’t leave the house for about another 15mins and the meeting place was a 30 min walk away, I decide to take a taxi. Although it was about 4 Euros, it made got me there on time, I got to use my Spanish and it was my first taxi ride, so it was fun. This hike was organized through the Dept. of International Studies on campus, so the group was made of other Americans, Germans, Spaniards, and Italians. This lead to a very interesting ride on this huge double decker bus because there were so many languages being spoken. It was about a 45 min ride to the mountain, which was just outside Alicante, but the last 10 minutes was a little nerve racking because we were driving on a tiny mountain road with a huge bus. Along the hike, we had 3 guides that spoke either Spanish or English, so they could tell us the history of the different things we saw. I do have to admit that the

All the CIEE kids that were on the hike hike was tough, with it being quite steep at points, but the views from the top were amazing. We actually could see the city of Alicante during parts of our climb, which was really cool. However, the mountain was cold, with a dusting of snow along with a lot of wind. When I got back to my mi casa, mi familia had lunch served, so I ate before taking a 4 hour nap. Since I was still tired, I read and spent the night on the internet and got to bed early again.
Domingo 8 febrero 2009—Seeing that I’m caught up on my sleep, I couldn’t sleep past 9am, which is when mis padres left to go to some park. My host brothers were also gone for the weekend skiing in the Sierra Nevadas near Granada, so I had the house to myself. I started with a nice long shower because my host dad told me to limit my shower to one per day and to only ten minutes. I’ve been really good so far, but I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I also read and worked on my homework. Mis padres returned around 2:30 and so did
mi abuela and we had a nice seafood paella. In this, I noticed that I was eating octopus, it tasted fine, but I did find a few pieces that still had tiny suction cups on the tentacles that kinda shocked me at first. All during the day, my throat has been bothering me, I assume from the windy hike the day before. However, this didn’t stop me from going to a Alicante Futbol game. We got free tickets to this game because one of my friends threw CIEE has a host uncle that owns the team. Although, the team sucks, it was still a fun game to go to. We were idiots however that left at what we thought was the end of the game at the 90 min. mark, but apparently there was some extra minutes added to the end of the game in which Alicante scored to tie it at 1-1. We heard the team score from outside the stadium, so in the future, we plan to stay until we’re sure the game is over. After this, I went to meet another friend to play pool, but the place was packed, so we ended up going somewhere else

Mi y chicas to watch a Barcelona game. I made it home for dinner and then finished my research paper along with skyping with many people
Lunes 9 febrero 2009—My Spanish professor was feeling better and was back today, which was nice and made the class easier. Also, my Camino and History classes were easy too, which I was glad because my throat still hurts. However, when I left the Universidad at 3, it was 70 degrees, which helped my throat, lol. Now, I’m doing homework, working on this blog and looking forward to listening to two friends radio show. Also, at 8:30 I have dance class again, which is always a lot of fun.
