We hadn't planned to go away last weekend but as the sun was shining we thought we had better make the most of it. So, off we went down the motorway, paying our tolls, and soon enough we were negotiating the different coloured parking zones in Tudela. We ended up settling for the blue zone and, astonishingly had to pay just 75 cents to cover ourselves for the whole weekend! That's because there was only an hour left that we needed to pay for.
Once again we got a good deal with
NH Hotels and they allowed us to check in early which was nice. We then strolled through the town centre (or is it a city centre?) where we sat in the
Plaza de los Fueros and ate our lunch. The sun was shining and we were entertained by three different bands which had walked though the streets to join together at the bandstand. The drum and pipes were really good but the accordionists looked like they would rather be elsewhere. The brass band were brilliant.
After lunch we took a stroll down to the Cathedral area, meandering through the narrow cobbled streets. It really was a very pleasant
spring day. We saw some interesting murals and a church or two before finding ourselves by the old bridge over the Ebro river. The river has been in virtual flood for a couple of months now and has wrought havoc in some places. Luckily there was no sign of this in Tudela. Crossing the river we then walked along a footpath admiring the farms and fields which produce so much of Navarra's vegetables. Have I said what a beautiful day it was?!!
Returning to Tudela we made our way to the edge of town and looked for the ascent up to the statue of Christ which dominates the nearby hillside. It was quite easy to find as the street leading up is imaginatively called "the street which climbs up to the monument"! The views from the top were amazing and we stopped a while to enjoy the view. Back in the main square we sat out and had a beer. Siesta time came and went but we were enjoying sitting out in the sun that we treated ourselves to another beer instead!
We did manage a late siesta. That ensured that we were able to eat in a
restaurant with other people around us! That made a refreshing change. One of the vegetables which Tudela is famous for is artichoke. Cooked with some
Jamon Serrano it is absolutely delightful. Naturally we managed to polish off a bottle of red too, before finding a nice bar to enjoy the end of the evening.
The following morning we left Tudela and headed towards one of Navarra's most outstanding attractions, the
Bardenas Reales. You've probably guessed though, that's the subject of the next blog.
