This summer was all work, work, work. It was madness. Normally summer in Denmark is dead quiet with everyone off on travels, and this was no exception, people were away and I couldn't get anything done really and yet, it was still incredibly hectic at work. I think quite simply we've got too much going on for the amount of people we are. So, it was crazy busy. My birthday was fantastic, a sushi date and then a picnic in the garden, it was a really relaxed day. Then work, work, work and somewhere along the way I was invited to go to Bornholm for a couple of days by a new friend. We met at a burlesque workshop and he invited me to his summer house on the island of Bornholm for a few days. I have only been to Bornholm for user testing so it was nice to be invited for relaxation and did I ever need it, I was completely stressed when I got there, and three days of sun, beach, forest, and bike rides, and I was fixed. I had an absolutely wonderful time relaxing and reading and then cooking dinner with Sofie & Jacob, and just
enjoying doing everything slowly and taking time to go for walks. It was fantastic.
I went back to work after my little three day getaway and soon enough, my dear friend Maria came to visit, her annual summer migration to visit her home in Denmark. As fate would have it, her plans got shifted around; she had planned a trip to Barcelona with a friend who was no longer able to make it and I spontaneously (surprising myself actually) volunteered to go. Another 3 days mini vacation! It was such a great trip. Maria booked us a little apartment in the city and we spent a half day at the beach and the rest of the time eating our way through all the tapas in Barcelona. We were so lucky to be invited by Christian, a friend of Maria's living in Barcelona who is Danish but loves Barcelona, to go to Festival Gracia, which was a huge outdoor street festival with every street having a different theme and decorations all made from recylced materials. We had a nice dinner with Christian's friends and great conversation. The next day, we found a big marketplace and tried all sorts of different
specialities and just outside, we found a photo exhibition from Silicon valley's moments of invention, it was a whimiscal gallery and very fun photos of the people who made your phones and computers. Next up was exhaustion - we had really outtouristed ourselves and so we decided to invest in the hop on, hop off bus, which was perfect. We got to see all the sights, the Gaudi park, and all the amazing little bakeries and tourist attractions and enjoy the comfort of the bus, which was much needed at that point. It was a perfect little getaway.
Finally, Dzl and I had spontaneously booked a trip to Bornholm before my friend Jacob asked me to join him on Bornholm, so now Dzl and I got to go on our getaway. We had booked a beach hotel for 3 nights in Allinge, a small beach town on the island. It turned out to be a hilarious and relaxing vacation, since the time we chose was the first few days AFTER the tourist season and everything was shut down. The few shops which were still open were exhausted and run down, and they had no energy or enthusiasm for the
last straggler tourists. We ended up taking our bikes on the ferry (driving would have cost $400!!!) and biked up to the historic castle, a sight that everyone should see on Bornholm, but perhaps I'm jaded living in Europe. It was lovely, but it was like any other castle. I think for me, the beautiful part was the view, Bornholm doesn't look at all like the other parts of Denmark I've seen and is much more green and hilly, and has coast lines a bit reminiscent of Oregon. Dzl and I spent the majority of our time reading and retiring to bed around 9pm because the entire city shut down at 8. It was a good getaway though to relax and we spent a lot of time eating a lot of fish. We even managed to meet for a few moments with my co-workers who had come for a day trip to see the island. It was a nice time but I think next time we'll go when there's a bit more excitment to be had!
